Aims

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Interpret a program critically.
Analyze the specificities of the existing situation.
Understand that the design project proceed from the "inside" outward (of the room or of the site).
Find links between the program and built space. Fabricate interiority, construct interior/exterior relations.
Become familiar with the measure of gestures, spaces, environments.
Manage overall project geometry in relation to physical structure.
Understand the internal coherence of the project.
Link work in plan, section and elevation through modelling and perspective.
Measure mutual influences of communal life and spatial systems.

Main themes

A further cumulative experience of architectural design.
.

A question is posed:
Either the program participates in the institutional evolution of culture.
Or cultural mutations instigate new programs and new means of expression.
Or institutions and culture are in a relation of mutuality.
The way in which the question is posed will allow students to understand and evaluate the import of political, social, economic and philosophical situations within society and their effects on the built environment.
The studio will include a theoretical introduction, as well as a presentation of case study references that may serve to support the evaluation of the project.

Questions of soil mechanics and geotechniqes, siting, geometry, mass, volume, public/private, served/servant, thresholds, foundations, structure, HVAC, etc., will be addressed.
