Aims

A reading and listening comprehension course aimed at equipping students with the receptive skills necessary for writing their dissertation and other academic work.
Reading comprehension : reading and understanding texts in the field of criminology.
Listening comprehension : understanding television programmes (talks, lectures) on subjects of interest to criminologists.

Main themes

To achieve these aims we will tackle :
- Reading strategies in a foreign language.
- The extension of specific vocabulary relating to criminology.
- The grammatical structures of the English language.
- Listening decoding strategies in a foreign language.
- English pronunciation and stress patterns.

Content and teaching methods

- Code and title : ANGL 1823 English comprehension of texts from the criminology field
- Year of study : CRIM Master 1
- Number of hours, rhythm, terms : 60h, 2h/week, the whole year.
- Aim: reading and listening comprehension of texts in the field of criminology, study of specific vocabulary and
basic grammar, reading aloud (stress and pronunciation).
- Evaluation : diagnostic and exemption tests ; written and oral exams.

CONTENT
Portfolio of texts and videos relating to criminology (see also above).

TEACHING METHODS
- Extensive reading of texts at home using reading strategies and note-taking techniques.
- Content-based activities in class.
- Analysis of and comments on the texts.
- Lexical extension exercises and comments on language points.
- Extensive and intensive decoding of television programmes.
- Pronunciation exercises on general and specific vocabulary.

PREREQUISITE
The A2 level of " the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ".

ASSESSMENT
- Exemption test at the beginning of the year (only for the students who get the official authorization from the School
of Criminology) (see the secretary's office).
- Continuous assessment.
- Exemption test on part of the course material in mid-year.
- Reading aloud tests.
- Written exam.

- Self-tuition CD-Rom.

FURTHER HELP BESIDE THE COURSE
- Teacher's reception hours.
- Personalized help with language problems at the self-tuition centre of the Institut des Langues Vivantes (ILV).
- Personalized help with language problems at the multimedia room of the Institut des Langues Vivantes (ILV).

At the end of the year, the student should have acquired reading skills roughly corresponding to the B2 level of " the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages " and listening skills corresponding to the B1 level of the same framework.
