Aims

To provide students with the information they require to enable them to inform their patients about anaesthetic methods and improve their pre- and post-operative management.

Main themes

Your patient is scheduled to undergo surgery. 1- evaluation of risks: global risk, epidemiology of mortality and morbidity during anaesthesia (safety, etc.); specific risks: intercurrent pathologies, medications to be withdrawn or maintained; supplementary verifications: need for paraclinical investigations; preparation for anaesthesia (optimisation of patient's state of health: respiratory physiotherapy, prevention of thromboembolic risk). 2- Anaesthesia: brief history; drugs used (hypnotics, curare, opiates); general or locoregional anaesthesia; monitoring; replacement solutions, transfusions. 3- postoperative period: analgesia; surgical shock; after-effects of general anaesthesia. 4- special situations: your patient is a child; outpatient surgery; emergency situations.
