Aims

Elementary level

Reading comprehension: the student:
- Can read short simple texts.
- Can find specific information in everyday material such as advertisements, leaflets, timetables etc.
- Can understand short simple personal letters.
- A2 Level of the " Common European Framework of Reference for Languages "

Listening comprehension
. Individual :
- Can understand expressions and very frequent vocabulary related to the world that surrounds the student (e.g.
very basic personal information, family, shopping, local area, studies).
. Interactive :
- Can understand the main point in short, clear, simple messages and announcements.
. A2 Level of the " Common European Framework of Reference for Languages "

Speaking
. Spoken Production :
- Can use a series of phrases and sentences to describe in simple terms his/her family and other people, living
conditions, his/her educational background and his/her present or most recent activity.
. Spoken Interaction :
- Can communicate in simple and routine situations requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar
topics and activities.
- Can participate in very short conversations, even though the learner can't usually understand enough to continue
the conversation.
. A2 Level of the " Common European Framework of Reference for Languages "

Writing
- Can write short, simple messages (for example postcards) or fill in very simple forms.
- A1 Level of the " Common European Framework of Reference for Languages "

Main themes

Code
- Ability to master the basic vocabulary and the basic structures of the German language.
- As far as speaking skills are concerned , we will focus more on communication skills than on language accuracy.
Nevertheless, special attention will be paid to correct pronunciation.

Culture
At all previously mentioned levels : increasing awareness of the culture of German-speaking countries

Methods
- The course is centred around different topics (e.g.: hobbies, holidays, housing, advertising, ¿.)
- Learning with teaching or authentic material (listening and reading comprehension).
- Consolidation and extension of basic vocabulary and the basic structures of the German language by means of
written or oral exercises (drills, role-plays, interviews, discussions in small groups of 2 or 4, ¿)

Content and teaching methods

ALLE 1800 - Elementary level

- 2 hours per week during the whole academic year
- Course open to all students registered or not at UCL

Prerequisites: none

Objectives:
Level A2 of the CEFRL for oral expression, for the listening and reading comprehension
Level A1 of the CEFRL for the written expression

Methods and content:
- extension and consolidation of the vocabulary and the grammar structures
- listening and reading exercises
- oral exercises (individual and interactive)
- written exercises
- activities on general topics

Evaluation: autoevaluative tests, written and oral exam

Guidance
- Group of 25 students maximum
- The teacher is available during his/her office hours and can be contacted by e-mail.
- Guidance at the self-tuition centre (CAA) and multimedia room of the ILV.

- " Allemand - Vocabulaire de base " by Langenscheidt
- Audio and video tapes (available at the C.A.A.)
- CD-Rom (self tuition exercises) created by the l'ILV

Assessment
Different aspects are taken into account for the final evaluation
- Continuous assessment.
- Written and oral exam in June and/or September.

This course is taught in the 1st and 2nd semester.

Requirement :
No knowledge of German
