Ecole doctorale en économie (graduate school in economics)Organisation et composition
Adresses
The Graduate School in Economics of the UCL is based on two research centers : the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE) and the Institut de Recherches économiques et sociales (IRES). These research institutes publish extensively in the top scientific journals. The Masters program (taught in English) has an enrollment of about 40 students and the Graduate School expects to welcome some 30 doctoral students. Courses and seminars can be chosen within the joint course offering of the UCL and of two nearby universities : the University of Brussels (ULB) and the University of Namur (FUNDP). An extensive choice is thus offered to students, including a variety of lectures given by visiting foreign scholars. Lectures cover the lastest scientific developments (current research, partly unpublished). The programme emphasises student involvement, development of communication skills and inquiry into epistemological issues. Graduates find employement in international carreers, either in higher education or in financial organizations. ObjectivesThe school aims at offering doctoral students a choice of advanced courses in various fields of economics. The idea is twofold: to confront students with the latest developments in their own field of research and to expose them to recent developments in at least one other field of research. The choice of courses is enlarged thanks to a collaboration with the University of Brussels (ULB) and the University of Namur (FUNDP). Beyond courses, that collaboration also opens the possibility of joint supervisions of thesis and the organisation of a yearly meeting of doctoral students from the three institutions. Programme managementThe Graduate School Committee is responsible for the course programme, which is decided on a yearly basis, and for the implementation of the doctoral programme procedures at UCL. There is also a Coordination Committee involving representatives of the three participating institutions. Research themesResearch in economics at UCL covers the following fields: - general equilibrium and games, - industrial organisation, economic geography and international trade, - growth and fluctuations, - public policy: health, education, environment and natural resources, - financial institutions and markets, - labour markets, social policy and social economics, - economic history and history of economic thought, - ethics and social choice, - econometric methods. Admission and registrationAccess to the Doctoral school is granted to students who have obtained a Master in economics at UCL with honour. Access is also granted on a case by case basis to students holding a similar degree, possibly with the addition of some Master courses. EvaluationEach course entails an evaluation. That evaluation is made on a pass/fail basis. Diploma and certificationThe programme leads to a degree of "doctor in economics" which specifies the courses followed. INTER-UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL IN ECONOMICSThe departments of economics of the University of Louvain (UCL), the University of Brussel (ULB) and the University of Namur (FUNDP) offer advanced courses and seminars based on ongoing research and recent working papers. These courses and seminars are offered to Ph.D. student in their first year. At UCL, students are required to take four courses. The evaluation is made on a pass/fail basis.
