 Objectifs
To keep in touch with the latin language and literature, seeing the interest to be found for the " roman " studies. At the end of the course, the students must be able :
- to translate and explain the passages studies during the course ;
- to understand globally a text they read for the first time at the exam and which they individually prepare.
- to write a paper on the problematic linked to the work or author studied.
Objectifs
Maintenir le contact avec la langue et la littérature latines, compte tenu de l'intérêt qu'y trouvent les études romanes. Au terme du cours, les étudiants doivent être capables de restituer la traduction et l'explication des passages étudiés au cours ; de produire un travail de lecture cursive de passages préparés individuellement ; et de rédiger un travail de réflexion concernant une problématique suscitée par l'oeuvre ou l'auteur étudiés.

Explication d'auteurs de la latinité antique, médiévale ou renaissante.
Le choix est guidé par leur intérêt propre ou par leur rapport avec les littératures romanes (français surtout). Le cas échéant, on soulignera les traits d'époque de la langue.

The choice is made according to the intrinsic interest of the students and to what they know about the roman literatures ( especially French). If need be, the specific traits of the language of the age in question will be underlined.
Résumé
Thanks to this course, the students should be able to
remain in contact with the latin language and literature, taking into acoount the linguistic, cultural and historical interest of the study of latin for the particular perspective of the roman studies. The precise reading or translation of an author of the antic, christian, medieval or renaissance Latin civilization is accompanied with a literary explanation in line with the history of the roman literatures, the evolution of the themes and of the literary genres, the new orientations of text analysis. Without being the priority, special attention is paid to the linguistic and rhetoric explanation : observation of remarkable language facts, of characteristic language traits of each age, analysis of the different language levels, prosody and metrics, style procedures, etc.
Résumé
Ce cours doit permettre aux étudiants de garder un contact avec la langue et la littérature latines en tenant compte de l'intérêt linguistique, culturel et historique de l'étude du latin dans la perspective particulière des études romanes. La lecture et la traduction précise d'un auteur de la latinité antique, chrétienne, médiévale ou renaissante sont accompagnées d'une explication littéraire en rapport avec l'histoire des littératures romanes, l'évolution des thèmes et des genres littéraires, les orientations nouvelles de l'analyse textuelle. Sans être prioritaire, une attention particulière est portée à l'explication linguistique et rhétorique : observation des faits de langue remarquables, des traits d'époque, analyse des différents niveaux de langage, prosodie et métrique, procédés de style, etc.

Prerequisites : It is mandatory for the students, enrolled on the program of the Roman Studies, to have followed the courses on Latin in the first 2 years of their program. Other students are advised to have followed latin courses, so that they have quite a good background.
Evaluation : Oral exam.
