Message from the Co-ordinator

The major event for this coming month is the 24th Benelux Meeting in Systems and Control, which will take place in Houffalize, Belgium, from 22 to 24 March, just in time to celebrate the return of Spring. As you will see, the organizers have put together an interesting programme of plenary talks. I look forward to seeing many of the IAP members in Houffalize.

Michel GEVERS
Co-ordinator IAP V/22

Graduate School in Systems and Control

Subspace-based signal processing methods and applications
Lecturer: Richard J. VACCARO (University of Rhode Island, USA)

Subspace algorithms have been developed over the past twenty years for a variety of signal processing problems including signal processing problems inclusing signal modeling, frequency estimation, and direction-of-arrival estimation in sensor-array signal processing. In some applications, subspaces corresponding to matrices formed from observed data change with time. In such cases, subspace tracking algorithms are used to obtain subspaces from new data by updating subspaces obtained from previous data. This course will develop the theory behind subspace signal processing algorithms and present several applications.

Contents
1. Mathematical foundations. Review of linear algebra, linear systems theory, and statistics related to the development of subspace signal processing algorithms.
2. Signal modeling. A detailed example of using subspace methods to estimate a vibration displacement signal from noisy accelerometer measurements.
3. Direction of arrival estimation in sensor-array signal processing. Problem formulation and development of several algorithms for DOA estimation.
4. Weighted subspace fitting algorithms. WSF algorithms estimate parameters by minimizing a weighted cost function; the weights are computed to achieve optimal performance.
5. Subspace Tracking I. Development of theory and algorithms for subspace tracking.
6. Subspace Tracking II. Consideration of several algorithms from the literature.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of linear algebra linear systems theory, and statistics.
