Message of the Coordinator

Our next DYSCO study day will be held in Mons on May 24 (see the program here); do not miss it!

Some of you may have heard that our colleague Rodolphe Sepulchre is moving to the University of Cambridge. Rodolphe is the promotor of the team in Liège and has been a key contributor to our network for a quarter century (!). In his message below he urges us to "take nothing for granted". On behalf of our community I would like to thank Rodolphe for all what he has brought to our network and to many of us, and wish him all the best for his new position.

Thanks Rodolphe!

Vincent Blondel
DYSCO coordinator

Take nothing for granted!

2013 will be a special year for me since I recently accepted a professorship in the department of engineering Cambridge University (division of information engineering, control group). I will start there next September. Until recently, I took for granted that my current university was the place to be for the rest of my career.

A professional move is an occasion to pause, contemplating for a moment the past and the future.

Looking at the past, I cannot stress enough the importance of our research network. The IAP program existed when I started my PhD in 1990, and it has been part of my scientific environment since then. It shaped my scientific identity in systems and control but at the same time it has been the seed of repeated ventures to neighboring areas because of its interdisciplinary flavor. Many of us take this environment for granted. But such a unique gift does not exist in many places in the world and can only be the result of constantly reinventing and reinvesting its very existence. Which is primarily a network of individuals, meaning much more than securing a financial budget. Take nothing for granted!

Looking at the future and returning from a two-week trip to China, I have seen there an academic environment that evolves at light speed. It could be that it resembled last year to the environment of my early years but that it will resemble next year to something we will have a lot to learn from. Most of our current collaborations are geared towards west, for good reasons. Should we take this for granted? Should we consider an Indian and a Chinese partner in the next phase of our IAP?

Systmod will of course continue its active participation in DYSCO, perhaps with a cambridgean zest. I wish the very best to the future of our research network and take this opportunity to warmfully thank those past and present invididuals who worked hard to make it a place where excellence and friendship live in close harmony. Take nothing for granted!

I have nothing to show close to the beautiful sculptures that Joos shared with us in last month newsletter but I promise you a funny picture as soon as I will have joined a Cambridge choir ;-)

Rodolphe Sepulchre

DISC Summer School : Modeling and Control of Distributed Parameter Systems

Conferentiehotel Drienerburght (Enschede), The Netherlands

June 17-20, 2013

The organizers have the pleasure to invite you to participate in the DISC Summer School on "Control of Partial Differential Equations", which is scheduled to take place from June 17-20, 2013, at “Conferentiehotel Drienerburght”, Enschede (University of Twente), The Netherlands.

The invitation is aimed at research students and staff members of DISC, and other researchers and engineers engaged in the systems and control area. Distinguished speakers will each present a series of tutorial lectures.

Since more than 250 years partial differential equations (pde’s) are used to model physical behaviour. However, this is most often done under the assumption of no external signals. Only since the sixties and seventies of the last century mathematical theory has been developed to cope with pde’s with (boundary) control and observations. These results combined with the increase in computer power makes it nowadays possible to study practical (engineering) problems modelled by pde’s, Examples of such are; controlling the water levels in a river and estimation of the spatial temperature distribution in a room.

Many physical systems can be formulated using a Hamiltonian framework. The Hamiltonian can for instance be the energy of the system. Stabilizing the system could be done be driving the Hamiltonian to zero. Thus having such a physical quantity at our disposal can simplify the controller design considerably.

Once a controller is designed we normally have to approximate the system in order to (numerically) test the closed loop behaviour. This approximation has to be done with care, since for instance, in the approximated system the Hamiltonian may not increase.

Lecturers

The main program will consist of various speakers. Keynote lectures will be given by:

  • Georges Bastin, Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium
  • Laurent Lefèvre, Laboratoire de Conception et d'Intégration des Systèmes, Valence, France
