Message of the Coordinator

Dear colleagues,

This is the first newsletter for DYSCO II and it is also the 150th newsletter for our network (the first newsletter was issued in 1997). I would like to take this opportunity to thank my two predecessors Michel Gevers and Paul Van Dooren for coordinating our network for so many years and with so much dedication, vision and expertise. Thank you so much!

The proposal for DYSCO II was introduced in October 2011. Our proposal has been evaluated by international experts and has received top ratings and lavish comments; it was evaluated as one of the top IAP networks. As a result, DYSCO has been renewed for another 5 years, from 2012 to 2017.

The composition of the network has slightly changed and it gives me great pleasure to welcome our new partners : an extended team in Ghent, a new partner in Namur, and three outstanding international partners: Princeton, Stanford and MIT. Our DYSCO partner at ULB, although not anymore formally part of the network, will continue active collaborations with the network.

The presence of international partners is a novelty for DYSCO. The promoters would like to encourage collaborations, visits and interactions with these international partners. One instrument for achieving this will be through visit grants. Every year there will be 10 DYSCO grants (of 2000 euros each) for exchange visits between researchers from DYSCO's Belgian and US partners. Please consider applying for this great opportunity.

The kick-off meeting for our network will take place on October 8, 2012 at the Château-Ferme de Profondval, close to Louvain-la-Neuve. We have worked hard to make this an exciting and stimulating event: please chek the website for the complete program.

The day after kick-off we will also have a celebration of our colleague Georges (Jojo) Bastin. It is hard to believe but the young-looking Jojo is already turning 65 and will become emeritus this year. Jojo has been a continuous and loyal support to DYSCO and to our community. This will be a warm and friendly workshop with many of Jojo’s colleagues and former students present. All DYSCO members are cordially invited to attend.

The DYSCO newsletters contain information of potential interest to a wide audience (DYSCO alumni, visitors, researchers in related areas, etc); we have therefore decided to make the newsletter widely accessible. It is now possible to freely subscribe to the newsletter by sending an email to sympa@listes.uclouvain.be with "subscribe dysco-news" in the subject. Please consider passing this information to people you think may be interested.

I am looking forward starting this exciting network with all of you at the kick-off day. In the meantime I wish all of you splendid vacations.

Vincent Blondel
DYSCO coordinator

  • FERRANTI Micol, PhD student (starting date: March 2012), Spectral properties of (perturbed) normal matrices and their applications, promotor : Raf Vandebril
Abstract : in this research project computational and theoretical issues linked with spectral properties of the classes of normal and perturbed normal matrices will be studied. The overall research goal is the development of new, theoretically well-supported, fast, accurate and reliable algorithms for computing (approximate) spectral decompositions of (perturbed) normal matrices. The embracing goal encloses three weighty subgoals. We aim at notable progression in, and aspire towards significant contributions in theory, algorithms design and the development of competitive software.
  • MICHEL Loic, Post-doc (starting date: July 2012), Modeling and simulation of power electronic systems in the complementarity systems framework, host : Wim Michiels
Abstract : power electronic converters make use of semiconductor components operating at a high switching frequency to reach desired dynamics at a slower time scale. Modeling and simulation methods are indispensable for the design and analysis of these converters. Because of the large difference in time scales, non-smooth methods are needed to make a simulation possible in a reasonable amount of time. The objectives of this research is to model power electronic systems will by complementarity systems, a subclass of hybrid systems. A transparent and general framework will be developed, which allows to model complete systems including power electronic circuits, controllers and dynamic loads. At the same time generic numerical methods will be developed for complementarity systems, whose scope reaches far beyond power electronics applications. Finally the project will focus on the simulation of power electronic systems, based on the advantages of the complementarity modeling framework and the developed numerical algorithms.
