Message of the Coordinator

We had a great study day in Ghent yesterday, in a beautiful environment and with a superb programme. In particular, Malcolm Smith's lecture, which brilliantly showed how fundamental research about network synthesis led to victories in Formula One racing, is probably one of the best lectures we have ever had at our study days. His presentation was a pedagogical masterpiece, mixing fundamental duality relations between electrical and mechanical systems with exciting videos from Formula One races. Thank you, Malcolm. And of course, I extend my thanks also to the other two plenary speakers, Ali Jadbabaie and René Boel, to all people from the network who presented posters, and to Margot Roels and the local organizing team.

The study day was introduced by some very thoughtful and deep reflections of Dirk Aeyels on the IAP programme and its virtues, with a vibrant plea for its continuation under the future federal government. Let me also thank Dirk for the very kind words he had, in his inimitable style, for the soon to be outgoing coordinator of this network.

OPTEC Workshop on Large Scale Convex Quadratic Programming - Algorithms, Software, and Applications

Leuven, November 25 and 26, 2010

The aim of this two-day workshop is to bring together scientists working on algorithms and software for the solution of large scale quadratic programs as they arise in numerous applications. Special emphasis will be given to convex QPs with large numbers of variables or constraints that necessitate specialized and possibly distributed algorithms.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • hierarchical or distributed QP solution algorithms
  • first order methods
  • optimal gradient schemes
  • structure exploiting interior point methods
  • structure exploiting active set strategies
  • dynamic programming and partial minimization type algorithms
  • direct sparse linear algebra
  • iterative linear algebra
  • parallel computation

The workshop will be planned as a two-day event (starting late on the first day and ending early on the second day to allow time for travel), including a workshop dinner on the first evening.

It will be single track with enough time for discussion after each talk. Two confirmed keynote speakers will give 45-minute talks:

  • Yurii Nesterov: Fast gradient methods for large-scale optimization problems
  • Michael Saunders

If you want to participate with a poster or a 25-minute talk, please send a short title and abstract to Attila Kozma (Attila.Kozma@esat.kuleuven.be) before July 15. We will confirm acceptance as a talk or as a poster latest by August 15. The workshop participation fee is 80 Euro.

The workshop is organized by M. Diehl and A. Kozma and financially supported by K.U. Leuven's Optimization in Engineering Center OPTEC and the EU FP7 Projects HD-MPC and EMBOCON.
