Message of the Coordinator

The main event of the coming month for our DYSCO network is the Study Day organized in Ghent on 31 May. I believe we have an outstanding team of plenary speakers. The preliminary programme can be found further in this Newsletter. All members of the network are invited to present a poster at that Study Day; the contributions of the different teams to these poster sessions are coordinated by the promotors. I invite each one to propose a poster contribution; it is a great opportunity to get feedback on your latest results.

The other news of the month is that the report that will serve for the evaluation of our DYSCO network has been finalized and submitted to BELSPO ahead of the deadline. This has represented a substantial amount of work for many of us. I wish to thank all members of the network for their contribution to this report, whose production has run remarkably smoothly. A couple of paper copies have been sent to each promotor. Additional copies can be produced on demand. In addition to the Main Report, whose content follows the BELSPO guidelines, and the complete list of publications, we have also produced an Appendix that contains the trajectories of our PhD students and post-docs since 2002, the visits received between 2007 and 2009, testimonies about our DYSCO network received from academic visitors, post-docs and PhD students, a section on awards and scientific responsibilities of all members of the network, a description of our Graduate School, and a very brief report on the Royal Visit to DYSCO of 1 October 2009.

Michel Gevers
Coordinator of DYSCO

Post-doctoral Research Associate position in Robust and Modular Engineering Design in Synthetic Biology
Imperial College London

A post-doctoral Research Associate position is available for 36 months in the first instance to work with Dr Guy-Bart Stan at the new EPSRC Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation at Imperial College London, U.K. The research project will be responsive to the applicant’s research history and interests but will fall broadly into the research goals of the Centre: (i) to build foundational tools for the robust and modular design of synthetic biology circuits and (ii) to derive applications using synthetic biology. The project is also an excellent opportunity for a skilled individual to cross-over into the exciting field of synthetic biology.

Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) in either, Applied Mathematics, Theoretical (Bio)physics, Control Engineering, Computational Biology, a closely aligned discipline or an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience. Previous experience in nonlinear dynamical systems, control, stochastic modelling of gene expression, systems biology, or equivalent research and industrial or commercial experience is desirable. Previous research on synthetic biology is also desirable but is not a requirement.

More information can be found at http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/people/g.stan

Informal enquires may be directed to Dr Guy-Bart Stan: g.stan@imperial.ac.uk

Our preferred method of application is online via our website at the following link: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/employment (select "Job Search" and enter the job reference no EN20100087). Please complete and upload an application form as directed and submit any other relevant supporting documents such as your full CV.

Should you have any queries regarding the application process please contact Barbara Skene at b.skene@imperial.ac.uk
