Message from the Coordinator

It's the beginning of the vacation period for most of us, and I wish you all a pleasant Summer holiday. But DYSCO never sleeps. Several important conferences are organized during the Summer months, in which many of us participate, some as plenary speakers. In addition, some interesting educational activities take place that are of interest to DYSCO members. I would like, in particular, to draw your attention to the Summer schools given at KUL by Lieven Vandenberghe (a former member of DYSCO, now Professor at UCLA) and at ULg by Christian Lageman: see the details later in this Newsletter.

It is a great pleasure to end this academic year by congratulating two of our DYSCO members who have received scientific awards during the last month. Raphaël Jungers (UCL) has been granted the annual IBM Belgium F.R.S.-F.N.R.S. computing science award for his PhD thesis, and Paul Van Dooren (UCL) has been elected Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Details can be found at the end of this Newsletter. Congratulations to Raphaël and Paul.

The lectures will give an introduction to some recent algorithms for convex optimization. In particular, we will cover two topics:

(1) Primal-dual interior-point methods for cone programming (linear, second-order cone, and semidefinite programming), as they are implemented in general-purpose software packages.

(2) Accelerated gradient algorithms and related first-order methods for large-scale convex optimization.

Abstract:

Optimization problems that involve minimizing the number of nonzeros of a vector, or the rank of a matrix, are common in many fields, including signal and image processing, computer vision, statistics, system identification, and machine learning. In general, these problems are very difficult to solve exactly. Simple convex heuristics, based on replacing the objective with the 1-norm or the nuclear (sum of singular values) have recently attracted wide interest. This interest is motivated by theoretical results that explain the effectiveness of the heuristics, and by the development of new algorithms for very large-scale instances of the resulting convex optimization problems. The first part of the talk will be an overview of some recent developments in this area. In the second part two applications will be discussed in more detail: topology selection in graphical models of time series, and nuclear norm optimization in system identification.
