We welcome Heather Maclean, PhD student from Queen's University, Kingston (Ontario), Canada. She is working with Prof. Denis Dochain on a project managed by ESA named MELiSSA (Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative), on the particular issue of biological systems modelling.

Within the framework of ARC, François-Xavier Orban de Xivry will start a doctoral research on February 16 under the supervision of Paul Van Dooren and Yurii Nesterov. This research will be dedicated to numerical optimization techniques for systems and control.

Gautier KRINGS (PhD student) is carrying out a scientific stay at MIT's SENSEable City Laboratory until July 15, 2009. He is working with Prof. Carlo Ratti and Francesco Calabrese.

Xavier Bombois (TUDelft) will visit us on February 10-11. He will work with Michel Gevers.

Study Days, Workshops and Summer Schools

September 14-18, 2009, Leuven, Belgium - Special Topic: Optimization in Engineering

This international conference is the 14th of the series of French-German meetings which started in Oberwolfach in 1980. This time, it is organized jointly with Belgian optimizers, and takes place in the historical center of Leuven, Belgium's oldest university town, close to Brussels. The conference will consist of 13 invited plenary talks, parallel contributed sessions, mini-symposia, and a poster session. It will address all aspects of optimization and its applications.

Prizes for the best non-plenary talk and best poster will be awarded during the gala dinner in the 13th century buildings of the Faculty Club of the University of Leuven.

Profile: the candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree in mathematics (or equivalent), must demonstrate a real interest for applications of mathematics and have postdoctoral experience. The candidates will be judged on the quality of their individual curriculum and experience and on the adequation of their scientific and teaching projects with the "complex systems" orientation of the department of Mathematics. Amongst submissions comparable for these two criteria, preference will be given to candidates with expertise in statistics and/or controlled systems.
