2nd Call for Papers
International Symposium on Computer Learner Corpora, Second Language Acquisition and Foreign Language Teaching
The Chinese University of Hong Kong
14-16 December, 1998
Symposium organizers: J. Hung (Chinese University of Hong Kong) and S. Granger (Universite Catholique de Louvain)
WHAT ARE COMPUTER LEARNER CORPORA AND WHY ARE THEY USEFUL?
Computer learner corpora are electronic collections of spoken or written texts produced by foreign language learners in a whole variety of language settings. Once computerized, this data can be analyzed with linguistic software tools, from simple ones, which search, count and display, to the most advanced ones, which provide sophisticated syntactic and/or semantic analysis of the data. This type of large-scale corpus analysis can bring many interesting insights to SLA theory and has numerous promising applications for foreign language teaching and learning.
The symposium is intended as a multi-disciplinary forum for discussion and presentation of research on all aspects of learner corpora, with particular importance attached to its links with second language acquisition theory and foreign language teaching.
A SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS!
As a result of the first call for papers, we are already assured of an exciting and varied programme with contributions covering corpus-based descriptions of learner grammar, lexis and discourse and approaches to materials design, classroom methodology and ELT tools (CALL programs, grammar checkers, etc.) based on analyses of learner corpora. Research is based on a whole range of learner corpora: learner testing corpus, learner corpus of interpretation, learner email messages, learner essays, learners informal speech, learner translations, etc.
We would still be interested in fitting a few more papers into the programme, specifically those dealing with novel ELT applications, especially computerized ones. Obviously, software demonstrations would also be very welcome. So if you have interesting things to say about learner corpora and ELT/SLA, we would like to hear from you!
