The role of duration in vowel categorization. Flemish vs. Dutch listeners: a case study<\/div><\/div>

This paper studies the effect of the regional background of listeners on vowel perception. In Germanic languages such as English, German and Dutch, phonological descriptions of vowel systems distinguish between \u2018long\u2019 or \u2018tense\u2019 vowels on one hand and \u2018short\u2019 or \u2018lax\u2019 vowels on the other hand. Both categories may differ in pitch, intensity, vowel quality and duration. This paper focuses on the perceptual role of vowel duration in vowel categorisation. Durational measurements were made of unstressed Standard Dutch vowels in spontaneous speech samples of native speakers originating from Flanders (Belgium) and the Netherlands. Only for the Dutch listeners did vowel duration seem to be one of the parameters determining the location of the phoneme boundary between tense and lax vowels. For the Flemish listeners this boundary could not be determined on the basis of our stimuli.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Dans cet article nous examinons une hypoth\u00e8se diachronique formul\u00e9e dans deux articles r\u00e9cents selon laquelle l\u2019imparfait serait en voie de devenir un pr\u00e9t\u00e9rit aspectuellement sous-sp\u00e9cifi\u00e9. Apr\u00e8s avoir rappel\u00e9 les arguments avanc\u00e9s par les auteurs, nous pr\u00e9sentons quelques donn\u00e9es provenant de romans de Patrick Modiano allant \u00e9galement dans le sens d\u2019une pr\u00e9t\u00e9risation de l\u2019imparfait. Nous cherchons ensuite \u00e0 pr\u00e9ciser le processus de grammaticalisation qui sous-tend ce changement s\u00e9mantique et \u00e0 interroger plus avant l\u2019aboutissement de cette \u00e9volution.<\/p>\n<\/div>
