More specifically, the focus is on recurring gestures that are used co-verbally together with the constructions [V(motion) in circles], [N spin around], [zigzag], and [all the way from X PREP Y]. Traditionally, Construction Grammar focuses on constructions’ verbal structure and meaning aspects. This paper aims to broaden that view and proposes to rethink the status of linguistic constructions as also including multimodal, and more specifically gestural, information.

<a href="https://sites.uclouvain.be/bkl-cbl/?sdm_process_download=1&download_id=4453" class="sdm_download grey" title="English multimodal motion constructions. Recently, there has also been growing interest in grammaticalization in the visual communication modes, focusing mainly on the development of grammatical markers in sign languages. This paper raises the question whether it is also possible to speak of grammaticalization in the domain of gesture. Referring to two gesture patterns in German, the pragmatic headshake and the intersubjective deictic, it is shown that most grammaticalization parameters also apply to evolutions in gesture. Therefore, it is argued that these evolutions may well be considered as grammaticalization as well.

Télécharger

Mirror mirror on the wall: Investigating heterosemiotic contrasts on Facebook

Heleen Mercelis
Since the end of the last decade, social media use and its growing impact on the self and on the production of identity have produced ample studies of computer-mediated communication (CMC). However, despite the recognition of the increasingly important role of visuals and the growing interaction of verbal and nonverbal semiotics on social network sites, these approaches remain largely ‘glossic’ in that they usually emphasize combinations of and contrasts between (written and spoken) language. The purpose of this paper is to introduce and discuss what one might call ‘heterosemiotic’ CMC, or contrasts between verbal and visual communication on Facebook, in teenage girls’ negotiations of heterosexual femininities.

Télécharger

Error analysis, contrastive linguistics and learner corpora, or how to use current linguistic tools to improve the level in SFL class: the case of change-of-state verbs

Lydia Fernández Pereda, Kris Buyse, Katrien Verveckken
Flemish students of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) often make errors when they use the Spanish change-of-state verbs (Morimoto & Pavón Lucero 2007), which lack full correspondence in French and Dutch (Meulman 2003, Hanegreefs 2004). This lack of correspondence is probably the reason why students make errors induced by the influence of one (or even both) of these languages. However, the degree of interference between both languages and Spanish has not been proven objectively yet.
In order to study this type of errors and interferences, the learner corpus Aprescrilov (Aprender a Escribir en Lovaina ‘Learning to write in Leuven’) has been compiled. The corpus will allow to determine more objectively not only the parameters that induce learners of Spanish to make errors on this topic, but also the interferences of the L1 and the L2 (and potentially L3, 4, 5) with the Target Language.
In this paper, we will focus on the objectives and methodology of a doctoral thesis on the use of these change-of-state verbs in the learner corpus Aprescrilov. In other words, no concrete results will be presented yet, as the investigation has only been started one year ago. We will first outline the theoretical framework of the study, in which Error Analysis (Santos Gargallo 2008) and Interlanguage study (Liceras 1992, Suby & Asención-Delaney 2009) are enriched with insights from Cognitive Linguistics (Cifuentes Honrubia 1996, Langacker 2008, Doquin 2012) and some studies on the Reference to the L1 and the L2 in the SFL classroom (a.o. Galindo Merino 2011). We will then continue with a state of the art on change-of-state verbs in Dutch and Spanish and briefly describe the architecture of the Aprescrilov corpus. The final section will summarize the methodology of the study, the main purpose of which is to design a new didactic tool that helps both SFL teachers and students in Flanders not only to better understand this particular group of Spanish verbs, but also to use them more correctly.

Télécharger

La concession dans les grammaires et ouvrages spécialisés du français

Alida Maria Silletti
Cette étude porte sur le traitement des conjonctions et locutions conjonctives concessives de subordination en français contemporain.
