The training course includes full time apprenticeships in recognised services and teaching centres. It lasts for at least five years : 3 years of foundation studies and 2 years of higher studies . During the first 3 years of basic training, the candidate will follow all the courses and take all the exams of the three undergraduate years in Dental Sciences. He will be exempt from doing these if he already a graduate in Dental Sciences, and will, in that case, be authorised to immediately embark on his higher study programme. Besides the theoretical activities and clinical practices, during each one of the five years, the candidate will have to present personally written scientific pieces of work either orally or in writing, before societies or in scientific reviews. All of the candidate's activities will be attested by means of his apprenticeship record report and the "ongoing" evaluation of these will take place twice a year (see below).

The apprenticeship project established by the universitypromoter must be approved by the ministerial validation committee for the speciality. These periods of practical training include being on call.

Specific procedures :

Admission conditions
• The applicant must hold the degree title of Doctor in Medecine or be a Doctor from a member country of the European Union authorising medical practice in Belgium.
• The applicant must be in possession of a document attesting that, at the end of the selection exams, he was retained as a specialist candidate in Stomatology, in a Belgian medical faculty. The juridical context and practical procedures regarding these selection tests can be obtained from the secretary's office. Degree holders from outside the European Union are only allowed to register on the programme in the context of procuring a university certificate for partially specialised training for the duration of two years (if they are in the process of doing a specialisation in their country of origin) or for an in-depth specialised training course for the duration of one year (if they are already recognised as specialists in their own country).

The Royal Decree of 30.05.2002, relating to the planning of the medical offer for the public, published on 14.06.2002, applies to those candidates wishing to obtain the title of Specialist Doctor in Stomatology (those candidates are thus counted among the general practitioner candidates or specialists in the context of the numerus clausus).

Admission procedures
Applications for admission must be addressed to the academic supervisor. The organisation of the entrance selection tests is arranged in accordance with the calendar and the general examination rules and regulations.

Selection Committee
The Selection Committee for candidate assistant specialist doctors (MACCS, in French) is composed of the members of the
Teaching Committee, to which are added two guest members and two coopted members.

Parallel to the practical training, the specialist candidate will follow a university training programme organised as follows :

part - Foundation studies
During the first 2 years of the undergraduate course in Dental Sciences, the candidate will have to follow all the theoretical and
practical courses except those he is exempt from because of his degree as a doctor in medecine or as a doctor. In addition, the
candidate will follow 90 hours of theoretical sessions and 170 hours of practical sessions each year:
• journal-club (45h)
• service staff (45h)
• assistance in clinical activities of the service (consultations, surgical interventions, on-duty calls) (135h)
• participation in national and international courses and congresses, (20h)
• participation in Belgian inter-university lectures (15h)
These two years constitute the specific university training (FUS).
In the third year, the candidate will follow all the theoretical and practical courses of the third undergraduate year in Dental
Sciences as well as following the activities of higher training described below.

N.B. : the candidates are jointly enroled as undergraduate students in Dental Sciences and as assistants candidate specialists
during the first 3years.

part - Higher studies
The higher studies consist of : :
• Lectures on complements of Stomatology (60h)
• Polyclinic Stomatology (90h)
• Turns on Stomatology Wards (45h)
• Discussions of clinical cases of Stomatology (30h)
• Demonstration operations of Stomatology (135h)
• Seminar on Stomatology (45h)
• Participation in Belgian inter-university courses (15h)

Theoretical and practical exams of the three undergraduate years in Dental Sciences (DENT 21 , 22 et 23). "Ongoing" evaluation carried out by the practical training supervisor every six months, also taking into consideration the "savoir," the "savoir-être" and the "savoir-faire" of the candidate.

At the end of the first two years (FUS) of the foundation studies and in conformity with the Ministerial Decree of 16 March, 1999, an oral evaluation, by a jury composed of all the work experience supervisors and the members of the French-speaking Ministerial Commission for the recognition of specialists in Stomatology and maxillo-facial surgery is carried out and involves:
• the presentation of 3 clinical cases
• the resolution and discussion of a clinical case presented by the jury
• an average score of 60% is needed and is sufficient for passing this exam ; in case of failure, the candidate is authorised to retake the exam once again within 3 months, but in August at the latest (possibly after a complement of training depending on the directives of the jury). The final evaluation is carried out by a jury composed of the university and non-university practical training supervisors, and by members of the French-speaking Ministerial Commission for the recognition of specialists in Stomatology and maxillo-facial surgery and involves :
• Theory: theoretical questions from the European Board
• Clinical studies : presentation of clinical cases personally diagnosed and treated
• Practical studies : resolution of clinical cases presented by the members of the jury
• Scientific cases : scientific pieces of work, published and/or presented before scientific societies.

Upon fulfilment of the above-described training requirements, the teaching committee will award the academic title in Stomatology. This title does not replace official recognition by the ministerial validation committee. It attests the successful completion of an academic and scientific study programme in the context of specialised training leading to this validation.
