Minor in Statistics [30.0]

Retour en début de pageStudy objectives

Aims of the course in terms of skills: the minor aims to allow the student to acquire basic skills in applied statistics which are of use in his/her specialist subject or help him/her prepare for a Master's in Statistics.

Admission

Retour en début de pageAdmission Requirements

The minor in statistics is open to all students from all UCL baccalaureate courses for whom statistics appears to be an attractive additional tool. The real content of his/her program will depend on his/her goals and basic skills in statistics, mathematics and IT.

We divide the students into three groups based on the role mathematics and statistics play in their university course:

An adviser from the Institut de statistique will be available to help the student decide in which group s/he belongs and to help him/her choose his/her electives to match his/her aims.

Practical Informations
Enrolling on the minor

1 Organizational details:

Courses adviser: Professor Christian Hafner -

Practical information: Sophie Malali -

2 Admission to the minor:

The minor in statistics is open to all UCL students; admission to the minor does not therefore require any additional administrative procedure, other than the enrollment procedure, to be completed.

3 Enrolling on the minor and checks on the enrollment:

BAC2
Students can subscribe to the option by their virtual office.
The student enrolled again in BAC2 is automatically registered.

En BAC3
Students in Bac 3 are automatically registered.

4 Checks to the minor enrollment:

There are no access conditions for the minor in statistics; the enrollment does not therefore need to be validated.

5 Changes to the minor enrollment

Requests to change the enrollment form must be sent, with supporting reasons, to the conseiller aux études (course adviser) of the student's own faculty by 10 October.

Course times

1 Consulting course times

Course times can be consulted at the internet page : http://www.uclouvain.be/273980.html

2 Resolving timetable clashes using an equivalence table

The equivalence table may be consulted at the secretariat of the Institut de Statistique which runs the minor.

For all changes to the standard program in the event of a timetable clash, the student must obtain the approval of the conseiller aux études (course adviser) of the Institut de Statistique.

Contact person for advice and approval of possible changes: Sébastien Van Bellegem vanbellegem@stat.ucl.ac.be

Enrollment form for minor activities

1 Information on entry requirements

This point does not apply to the minor in statistics.

Based on previous information and knowledge acquired, the student chooses a group from the three below:

Group 1 : students who do not have mathematics training in their baccalaureate program and do not have statistics classes whose content is sufficiently methodological .

Group 2 : students who have good training in mathematics but who have covered little or no statistics in their baccalaureate program.

Group 3 : students who already have solid basic training in mathematics and statistics in their baccalaureate.

2 Enrolling on minor program activities

The enrollment of the courses are made by the virtual office. Students have to inform the LSBA of their course's choice.

3 Obtaining the "visa" from the person in charge of the minor

The visa is not requested where the student is taking the standard minor program proposed by LSBA.

However, should the student encounter a timetable clash and require a change to his/her timetable to solve the problem, s/he must obtain the visa from the conseiller aux études (course adviser):

Christian Hafner

Available support

1 Information on the course service

This point does not apply to the Minor in Statistics.

2 Consulting the table of available support for each activity

Alternative pedagogical support is intended solely for students who are following an activity as part of their minor and have proved they cannot attend classes. The agreement of one or more professors or Conseiller aux études (course adviser) will be required:

Christian Hafner

Organization of exams

1 Registering for exams

- In order to register for minor exams, the student fills in the registration form, taking care to respect the arrangements taken by his/her own faculty.

- The student will also sign up on the exam lists posted in LSBA.
