Admission and Enrolment Procedures for general registration

See the general admission requirements

Specific procedures :

Teaching method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

The teaching method used in the Master program in Computer Sciences puts students in situations of active learning, a balanced mix of group and individual work. A major place is reserved for non-technical skills (autonomy, sense of organisation, time management, communication in different ways ...).

In addition, students will be confronted with a variety of pedagogical approaches: lectures, tutorials, problem-solving sessions, individual work, small or large group work (including a major project putting groups of students in a semi-professional situation). This diversity will oblige students to activate their knowledge in different contexts thus developing their learning.

Finally, personal work, nourished by intellectual curiosity, is considered to be an essential component of the learning process. This personal work is exemplified by the effort to analyse and synthesise at the level of lectures, seminars and especially the thesis.

The most recent computer resources (hardware, software, networks) will be made available to the students in their work.

Use of foreign languages

Globalisation is imposing on all societies the need to open up to foreign markets. Moreover, the language of computer sciences is mostly English. To allow students to improve their knowledge of technical English, most of the courses in the first semester of both years are given in English. The course notes and the assistance are also in English. However, students may always ask questions and take the exam in French if they wish.

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

The learning activities are evaluated according to the procedures of the University (see the examination regulations), viz. written and oral examinations, laboratory examinations, personal or group work, public presentation of projects, and a thesis defence.

Internationalisation

International possibilities (for UCL students)

The 60 credit master’s program does not allow any place for an exchange of the Erasmus / Socrates / Mercator kind. Students interested in this kind of enriching experience are invited to consider the 120 credits master’s in computer science.

The training comprises up to 50% of courses (excluding the thesis) completely in English. This immediately opens up international career perspectives.

International appeal (for non-residents)

Up to 50% of the master’s courses are taught completely in English (excluding the thesis). In practice, most of the courses in the first semester of both years are given in English. Those of the second semester are mostly given in French. This “bilingual” offer allows students who do not master French to take courses in the first semester in English while learning French to prepare for classes in French in the second semester.
