The main objective of the minor is to train students enrolled in a bachelor programme to acquire a basic training in population and development studies, enabling them to understand and, to some extent, analyze the challenges of poverty, demographic transitions, ageing populations, North-South inequalities, and the interactions between population, environment and development.
The minor combines into a single block six courses (of 5 credits each) organized by the Department of population and development studies. . These six courses provide an overview of the population-development issues and train students to acquire knowledge in:
- demographic analysis and development theories
- population and development policies
- issues and challenges of the 21st century, both demographic as well as political, social and economic
- relationships between gender and social, economic and political inequalities
- analyses of the interaction between population, environment and development.

Courses in the minors are scheduled during the day, on Tuesday mornings, all day Wednesdays and Thursdays and Friday mornings.
2. Admission
Not applicable
3. Enrolment for the minor
In Year 2
Students who have enrolled online for the second year bachelor programme may also enrol for an option course (to do this, students must first be enrolled for Year 2).
Alternatively, students can access enrolment in the option courses through their virtual office (go to the UCL website, provide identification, click on ‘My Office’).
Students who are retaking their second year are automatically re-enrolled for the same minor.
In Year 3 of the bachelor’s degree
When they enrol for the third year, students are automatically enrolled for the second part of the option course. The same applies to students retaking their third year (BAC3).
All demands for exemption from this rule must be submitted to the adviser from the relevant programme.
4. Checking enrolment for the minor
Checking enrolment in the minor can be done online through the enrolment application foryear 2 of the bachelor programme.
5. Changing enrolment for the minor
Students who wish to change should consult the study adviser from their original faculty.
course schedule
1. Consultation of course schedule

2. Resolving timetabling clashes
At the beginning of Year 2 of the bachelor programme, students should draw up their timetable for Years 2 and 3 taking into account the schedule for the minor.
If there is a timetabling clash, various solutions are possible :
Deferring courses :
In case of a clash in Year 2 (courses of the major/ and option courses), students may request that they defer one or two courses to the following year, taking into account the sequences of courses (pre-requisites). The deferred course may be in the major or the optional course subjects.
It is not compulsory to take 15 credits for an option course each year. Each year of study should ideally contain 60 credits. Students should balance their two year programme in the best way to they can acquire, in Year 3, 30 credits for option courses and 150 credits for major.
Students should seek agreement from their study adviser to defer courses to the following year to ensure the overall balance of their two year programme.
Anticipating courses :

Timetabling clashes :
In certain cases, students may be able to use alternative methods for a course where there is a clash so that they do not have to attend the course.
If students are unable to attend the course, they must seek prior agreement from the lecturer. Information on alternative methods, if they are available, can be found in the course specifications in the detailed programme (above).
Finding an equivalent course which does not clash :
Useful information can be found in each course specification in the detailed programme (above). Students must seek prior agreement from their study adviser when choosing equivalent courses.
