Master [120] of arts in Pharmacy

AnnéesTravail de fin d'étude

Retour en début de pageStudy objectives

The training programme for the Master in Pharmacy is designed to enable pharmacists to properly carry out their role in providing cures for illnesses and to make the connection between chemistry, physics and biology. It also enable them to design, predict the effects, demonstrate the effectiveness and safety, prepare, dispense and advise on the use of drugs, in line with legal requirements and pharmaceutical ethics. lt is made up of theoretical and practical training as well as seminars, professional work placements under the direction of an experienced supervisor approved by the university and the production of a dissertation.

Retour en début de pageGeneral presentation of the programme

The programme (120 credits) comprises core subjects (74 credits), a focus (30 credits) and an option course (16 credits).

Apart from the core subjects which are compulsory for everyone, students may choose :

- a focus : either the professional focus which provides training for professional pharmacists, or the research focus which is theoretical and practical training for research in pharmacy. The two focuses enable students to gain the professional status of pharmacist.

- one option course from the following five :

dispensing and pharmaceutical monitoring
innovation and design of drugs
production, checking and regulation
biopharmacy and pharmacotoxicology
research in pharmacy. This option course is only open to students doing the research focus.
The contents of the different parts of the programme are outlined below.

Wathever the focus or the options chosen, the programme of this master shall totalise 120 credits, spread over two years of studies each of 60 credits

Teaching method

Retour en début de pageStrong points of the pedagogical approach

The syllabus offers different option courses which cover the main stages from discovery to dispensing drugs and pharmaceutical monitoring, in addition to quality control and formulation. Students can therefore acquire more advanced training in the area of their choice, having done basic studies in all these areas which are necessary for a university level training in pharmacy. The research focus also gives them an introduction to pharmaceutical research whilst retaining the unique quality of the degree and the professional status that it leads to.

The programme contains a series of interdisciplinary studies which are designed to enable students to combine what they have learnt in different basic subjects (joint seminars, linked practical work) and apply them to real problems (pharmaceutical monitoring in thedispensary). The optional subjects may be chosen from a list of courses available in different schools of the Faculty : this also promotes interdisciplinarity in the study programme.

There are different teaching and learning strategies : alongside theoretical courses, there are practical assignments, work placement and different kinds of seminars requiring active participation from students, particularly when presenting individual or group work or producing written reports as a result of bibliographic research. The use of computer technology is also necessary to produce reports on practical work and many courses are available on iCampus. Placements may be undertaken in different professional environments e.g. industry, laboratories, hospitals. This introduces students to the different contexts in which pharmacists work. Certain courses or parts of courses in the research focus (e.g. research seminar on pharmacy and training for scientific work) include individual assigments enabling students to become familiar with the specialized literature in the area they have chosen.

Retour en début de pageEvaluation

Depending on the course and the learning activities, assessments are either written or oral (individual or in groups) or are done continuously.

Internationalisation
Apart from studying for a whole year at another university (mainly Erasmus scheme) the option courses (all or some) or certain placements and/or research seminars may be replaced by a placement abroad (Erasmus scheme or similar).

The course on Health Economics and Pharmacoeconomics (2 credits) is a new course developed in partnership with KULeuven and is to be held partly at both sites.

The different option courses are accessible to bachelors in pharmacy from other Belgian or foreign as well as bachelors from other schools and faculties at UCL or other Belgian or foreign universities, subject to the agreement from the admission committee (celis@sfar.ucl.ac.be). The whole, or part of, the study programme for the Master in Pharmacy is open to foreign students under the Erasmus exchange scheme or other equivalents, subject to the agreement of the Erasmus coordinator (preat@farg.ucl.ac.be)

The Pharmacy School has ERASMUS agreements with the following universities :
Germany (Saarbrucken) ; Spain (Alcala de Henares, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela) ; France (Lille and Lyon) ; Greece (Patra) ; Italy (Bologna, Parma, Pisa) ; Netherlands (Utrecht) ; Portugal (Coïmbra) ; United Kingdom (Bath).
