This programme is designed for students who have already gained a Master and are turning to the Advanced Master in Interdisciplinary Analysis of European Construction to gain additional special training in the field of European studies to establish a link with professional activities relating to the institutions and policies of the European Union.

It provides teaching in the legal, economic, political and historical foundations of European integration as well as an interdisciplinary seminar which tackles various issues relating to this.

There is a choice between three special option courses : Dimensions and Means of European Policies, Europe, States and Societies and Europe in the World. These enable students to deepen their knowledge in one of these areas.

Advanced teaching on subjects relating to European construction also gives students opportunities to consider more deeply the processes at work and to adopt a critical attitude towards them.

The programme is organized jointly by the Institute of European Studies at UCL and the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis (where the courses are held).

General presentation of the programme

This programme of 60 credits is made up of 270 hours of courses and seminars worth 45 credits, as well as a final assignment for 15 credits. The core subjects account for 30 credits and are organized in the first semester : they are made up of courses on different disciplines and an interdisciplinary seminar entitled Thinking Europe.

The second semester is devoted to the production of a final assignment (15 credits) and a specialization for 15 credits in one of the following option courses : Dimensions and Means of European Policies, Europe, States and Societies and Europe in the World. For 2008-2009, only the option course Dimensions and Means of European Policies is available.

To support students in producing their final assignment, there is an introduction to sources of information and documentation on Europe. Students must be given a positive assessment for this part before they can go on to the final assignment.

All the courses are held at the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis.

Doctoral programmes : The Institute of European Studies does not award doctorates in European studies. Each Faculty sets the conditions for entry to their doctorates. The Institute of European Studies participates in the Graduate School for European studies.

Special procedures:

‘Licence’ degree awarded in the French-speaking Community) or a foreign degree recognized as equivalent to the 120 credit Masters awarded in the French-speaking Community or validated by the panel for at least 300 credits.
For studies abroad which do not reach a total of 300 credits, applications for admission to the Advanced Master are subject to the approval of a panel who will consider the quality and content of the training undertaken abroad and may go on to validate it at a level of 300 credits.

Evaluation

This Advanced Master tackles European studies from a multidisciplinary perspective which accounts for its originality and special features. It applies the resources of political science, law, economics and history to the study of European integration. Students acquire the basic knowledge which enables them to understand the foundations of European construction and to take them further by choosing one of the three option courses : Dimensions and Means of European Policies, Europe, States and Societies and Europe in the World. The wide variety of approaches, together with the multidisciplinarity, enables them to analyze the complexity of the issues at stake.

The interdisciplinary seminar Thinking Europe develops the interdisciplinary aspect.

The teaching staff is made up of both academics who specialize in the subjects studied and practitioners from the institutions and common policies who can shed light on how they actually work and who represent a source of expertise for students.

Assessment may take the form of written or oral examinations. The interdisciplinary seminar Thinking Europe and the final assignment are assessed on the basis of a piece of written work, in accordance with guidelines set out by the supervisor.

To attract foreign students (whether on exchange or not), some courses are held in English. In the same way, students have the opportunity of taking the examination for each course either in French or English.
