This course is made up of two parts. One part focuses on various topics related to the German Culture, Language and Politics. The aim being to allow future translators to better understand today's Germany and to be able to translate implicit and explicit cultural or political references as well as any other specific aspect related to the German society.
In order to allow students to improve their communication skills in German, the practical part of the course will draw the students' attention to specific linguistic features of the German language in a contrastive approach. Moreover, the active students' participation will be fostered through oral presentations. They will be based on papers developing topics related to the other part of the course.
Numerous examples, feedback or idioms/phrases/expressions will be given to help students improve their communicative skills in German.

During the course, students will have the opportunity to make at least one oral presentation that will allow them to receive feedback on their performance(s); feedback that will be useful, moreover, for the proper preparation of the exam. The examination of the KULTUR part will consist of an oral presentation that goes into more depth on one of the themes covered in the course. This evaluation will also include the presentation and the presentation's ppt (slides to be printed and handed in as a document). The presentation counts for 40% of the KULTUR part. The exam is completed by a question on the course material (60% of the KULTUR grade).
In January, the SPRACHE part of the course : continuous certificative assessment covering oral and written skills in German (oral presentation, Woche für Deutsch, etc.) AND a project to be handed in at the end of the semester. In August/September, the assessment will be based on an project to be handed in at the beginning of the examination session and an oral exam.
The practical and precise instructions for both parts of the course will be specified on the Moodle platform.
The final grade will consist of 2 integrated parts. The two parts of the course are equally weighted, i.e. 50% for the KULTUR part and 50% for the SPRACHE part. However, a grade lower than 7/20 for one of the parts will automatically result in a failing grade for the entire course ; in this case the mark for the entire course will be equivalent to the lowest of both marks.
If the final mark is less than 10/20, the failed parts will have to be taken again during the August/September exam session. In case of an unjustified absence, students will have to retake both parts during the August/September exam session.
January session:
KULTUR part: oral presentation which deepens one of the topics covered in the course (40% of the KULTUR part) and question on the topics covered in the course (60% of the KULTUR part)

August-September session:

The work to be presented or handed in as part of the course is personal work that reflects the student's competence in German language and culture. The references used must be mentioned in an appropriate way. The use of machine translation and artificial intelligence of any kind is forbidden, except where explicitly authorized in the instructions for an exercise or assessment.
Any fraud, such as the use of machine translation of any kind, writing of the work by third parties, plagiarism, etc. will be sanctioned according to the general study and examination regulations
