The seminar puts the principles of historical criticism through case study and the concrete analysis of sources of various natures and origins to work.
It also allows us to explore concepts and methods, as well as the models and hypotheses the confrontation of documentary sources and theoretical analyses give rise to.
During group working meetings, each participant, based on a personal preliminary work, presents his analysis of an aspect of the chosen theme, paying particular attention to heuristic and critical aspects, then submitting it for group evaluation.
The procedures and steps in treatment, as well as the synthesis and conclusions are developed in common.
By the deeper understanding of the historian's procedure it represents and the effort to communicate it involves, this seminar is direct preparation for the master memoir.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| By the end of this seminar, the student should be able to treat a question from history from the viewpoint of heuristics, criticism of sources and data interpretation. He should be able to write a research report delimiting the original question and synthesize hypotheses advanced, difficulties encountered and results obtained. |

Content
The seminar will be devoted to a historical theme that will form a thread running through the whole term. It will be presented by the teacher, and secondary themes linked to this thread will be chosen by the students with the teacher's agreement and studied on original/published sources, in order to train students to carry out personal research.
Teaching methods
After introductory sessions, students will carry out their research work under the supervision and with the help of the teacher and assistant(s). At the end of the seminar, students will present the progress of their work. A final paper will be handed in by the students at the end of the seminar.
Evaluation methods
Attendance at seminar sessions is compulsory, and the progress of students' work will be subject to continuous positive assessment (enabling the student to have his/her final grade consolidated); attendance is a condition for the award of a final grade. The final grade will be given on the basis of the seminar paper submitted in writing at the beginning of March following the end of the seminar. The final version of the submitted work may be revised with minor corrections, following a debriefing with the teacher and/or assistant(s). The final grade may then be re-evaluated positively, depending on the improvements made to this new version and/or on the continuous assessment.All forms of plagiarism are strictly forbidden and will be severely sanctionned
