This bi-annual seminar (alternating with LGLOR2931) aims to explore classical Arabic literature on the basis of texts read in translation.
The texts chosen are intended to illustrate various aspects of this literature such as poetry (pre-Islamic and classical), adab, history, geography, philosophy and science, law and theology.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
1 | know the issues of classical Arabic literature; |
2 | use the main tools related to the field (dictionaries, encyclopaedias, bibliographies, monographs and articles, online resources); |
3 | conduct personal research on specific topics in this field and write a limited essay on an aspect of the history of the Arab-Muslim world. |
Content
Introduction to classical Arabic literature based on a selection of texts read in translation.
Teaching methods
The course is lectured, but involves the active participation of the students. The course also involves the writing of an essay on an aspect of classical Arabic literature.
Evaluation methods
The final grade is awarded on the basis of an oral examination on the course material, the assessment of the written work and the active participation in the course.
