Prerequisites
The course is intended for students with a good knowledge of Arabic.
Main themes
The course covers the following topics:
- Concepts of codicology;
- Presentation of the issues involved in the copying and transmission of Arabic texts;
- Presentation of different medieval and modern Arabic scripts;
- Practical initiation to the reading of Arabic manuscripts (reading exercises);
- Introduction to the methods of editing Arabic texts (theoretical and practical aspects).
Content
The seminar focuses on Arabic palaeography and methods of critical edition and textual criticism.
The seminar is primarily practical: the student will learn to read medieval and modern manuscripts and to edit a medieval text critically.
Each part of the course will consist of two phases: a first phase consisting of a theoretical lecture, and a second phase comprising practical exercises.

Teaching methods
Part of the course is lectured (theoretical presentations). The rest consists of practical exercises.
Evaluation methods
Oral examination accompanied by a written assignment.
