Main themes
Study of classical Latin grammar (school level): morphology (nominal and verbal) and basic syntax. In addition, basic vocabulary and translation of short (versions) and long (cursive) texts are taught.
Content
The course aims to develop students' knowledge of classical Latin, with special emphasis on nominal and verbal morphology. The objective is to acquire as soon as possible an easy reading of classical texts of medium difficulty.
The course is a systematic presentation of the most common nominal and verbal structures in classical Latin. This presentation is complemented by several examples, given in a series of Latin sentences that had to be translated into French. The course also allows the acquisition and enrichment of basic Latin vocabulary.
The course material has several complementary axes :
1) Nominal and verbal morphologies.
2) Knowledge of a basic vocabulary.
3) Syntactic structures: mastering the structures encountered in the exercises.
A program of Latin versions, the objective of which is to fix theoretical learning and improve translation technique, is also planned as part of the practical exercises.
Teaching methods
Alternating interactive class sessions and practical work.
Evaluation methods
The evaluation of the learning outcomes will take place as follows:
- Regular tests during practical work sessions, which will be worth 20% of the final grade.
- Written test of theoretical knowledge and practical skills (including theme and version). This test will be worth 40% of the final mark.
Oral test to check mastery of cursive reading. This test will be worth 40% of the final mark.
Online resources
Files used during the classes are available on Moodle.
