Prerequisites
Learning outcomes

Content
- Mobile radio-propagation: path loss, fading, etc.
- Link budget and noise figure
- Basic principles of mobile cellular communication systems: cells, interference, multiple access, multiplexing, fading and diversity
- Receive structures: detection, time, space and frequency diversity, equalisation
- Multi-carrier modulation: OFDM
- Basic principles, problems and challenges of wireline communications: DSL, optical fibres
- Towards the sustainable design of communication systems
Teaching methods
The course is organised in
- 12 classroom sessions,
- 6 supervised exercise sessions,
- 3 supervised simulation labs, carried out in groups of 2 students, which occupy the equivalent of 6 exercise sessions.
Evaluation methods
Students are assessed individually and in writing on the basis of the specific objectives announced earlier. The questions focus on the understanding and application of concepts addressed by the course (not on pure restitution of content).
The evaluation of the laboratories is based on an oral presentation and discussion of the results at the end of the semester and accounts for 25% of the final mark. The laboratory-related grade holds for both sessions (January and August).
