The teaching unit is structured in three stages around an existing building chosen for its exemplary relationship between design and construction. The coherence of the architectural, material and construction choices is examined in depth. It becomes a key to understanding the building's architecture, through graphic exploration and an understanding of its codes of representation. The process of 'materialising an idea' and its representation(s) is therefore explored in reverse, based on the constructive and material analysis of an existing building.
Teaching methods
The unit alternates ex-cathedra lectures given in the auditorium and workshop sessions in small groups, a privileged moment of exchange and an opportunity to clarify theoretical notions at the moment of their application.
Ex-cathedra courses are designed to give students the knowledge they need to carry out their work independently, while benefiting from regular, personalised supervision from the teachers. This includes basic teaching on construction and its representation - including its history and development - as well as, more specifically, knowledge of the building under study, the history of its design, the issues involved in its materialisation, its importance in the history of architecture and construction, and so on.
One or more on-site sessions are organised, with the aim of understanding the building through close observation.
 
Evaluation methods
The final exam is weighted by continuous assessment to show how students have progressed and how involved they have been throughout the term.
Assessment is based on the student's ability to :
- reveal the use of materials
- use the tools of constructive analysis to understand buildings;
- to render the materiality and architecture of the building by applying graphic conventions established in a clear and structured manner.

    All the course support documents are available to students on the Moodle page dedicated to teaching. Moodle is the main exchange platform for the course.
