At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

- Put their theoretical expertise in the grammar (morphology and syntax) of contemporary Russian into practice in oral but especially in written and expression;
- With regard to understanding an oral and written speech and also by the same token the translation and interpretation processes : understand complex sentences and texts by identifying and correctly interpreting the constituent morphological and syntactic components in context;
- With regard to written and oral expression in language C, express or complete complex sentences or messages, reproducing these with correct morphological and syntactic forms that are appropriate for the category of discourse concerned.
- With regard to passive comprehension during the translation and interpretation processes: be able to recognise specific non-standard or archaic components.
 
Content
Grammar (100% of Q1 + 50 % of Q2):
• Compound sentence - Participles & participle clauses. Relative clauses (adjective subordinate clauses). Object subordinate clauses (subordinating conjunctions and uses). Direct and reported speech. Gerund & gerund clauses (adverb subordinate clauses). Circumstantial subordinate clauses (meanings of time, place, cause, consequence, purpose, condition, concession, etc.) + Simple sentence: adverbials (noun or prepositional phrases) with similar meaning (time, place, cause, consequence, purpose, condition, concession, etc.) introduced by prepositions.
• Active voice and passive voice.
• Verb aspect : specific uses (present, past, future, infinitive, imperative & negation);
• Simple verbs of motion (revision) and prefixed verbs of motion: meanings and uses.
• Preverbs : meanings and uses.
Translation from A into C (50% of Q2):
Translation of sentences from French into Russian on the basis not only of the grammar elements studied in the "grammar" part of the course, but also of points of attention linked to certain particular difficulties of translation into language C (with a contrastive perspective).
Teaching methods
Face-to-face exercise-based grammar practice.
• The theory is both studied by students through preparatory work at home and - where necessary - through in-class reviews in lecture format or a Q&A time at the beginning of each class session. The Russian grammar course is based on a RU-FR contrastive reflection with regard to the translative goal of the Bachelor and Master's degrees in Translation & Interpreting.
• Classes focus mainly on applying the theory through practical exercises and grammatical translation into C.
• Individual and group based out-of-class coursework focuses on the one hand on mastering the fundamentals of Russian grammar, and on the other on mastering the grammar through exercises and translation into C (in the Course Handouts, or syllabi, or any other technological didactic tools, such as Moodle).

In any case, generative artificial intelligences (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity and the specifications of the exercise or exams.

Language of instruction : Russian (exercises) and French (theory)
Evaluation methods
• The final evaluation (summative assessment) comprises two written exams (one for each quarter). Each exam comprises a variety of question types, exclusively focused on practical exercises designed to verify the student's understanding of the theory.
• Summative assessment counts for 100% of the course unit's final mark. The first academic term exam counts for 30 %, and the second academic term exam counts for 70 % of the final mark. The second quarter mark (100%) is equally divided between grammar (50%) and translation into C (50%).
Unless explicitly specified otherwise, the use of machine translation software or generative artificial intelligence (AI) is STRICTLY prohibited, whether in the context of practical exercises or examinations. In any case, generative artificial intelligences (AI) must be used responsibly and in accordance with the practices of academic and scientific integrity and the specifications of the exercise or exams.

• A pass grade of the course is considered with an overall mark of 10 out of 20 or higher. An overall mark inferior to 10 out of 20 will be considered a fail grade.
If in the June examination session the final integrated mark for the Course is less than 10/20, only the AAs or part(s) or the Course failed in the January (BMHRU1212A) and June (BMHRU1212B) sessions will be retaken in the August-September examination session. 
If, at the August-September session, the final integrated mark for the certificative assessment of the Course is less than 10/20 and the student does not obtain an overall pass mark, all tparts of the certificative assessment of the Course (100%) must be retaken during the following academic year.

Attendance and participation in the course are required. In accordance with article 72 of the General Regulations governing studies and examinations, the teacher has the right to propose to the jury to refuse to register in the January, June or August-September sessions a student who has not attended at least 80% of the course.
Other information
The use of telephones, smartphones or any similar device is forbidden during class sessions. Unless there is an urgent reason, justified and negotiated with the teacher, these electronic devices must be switched off (at least in "aeroplane" mode) and put away in the bags for the duration of each session. In any case, they may not be used as lesson aids.
