At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The course provides an introduction to the milestones of archaeological research and to the cultural heritage of the ancient Mediterranean. At the end of the course, the student must be able to describe the art and crafts of the ancient peoples of the Mediterranean, and to replace them in their (historical, political, social, economical) context of production.
 
Content
A first section of the course examines the history and methods of archaeology. A second section explores the main items of material culture of civilizations that developed in the Near East and the Mediterranean basin, from the first occurrence of writing systems around 3400/3300 BC to the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD. The main focus is on the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Egyptians and Achaemenid Persians (Middle Eastern civilizations) and the Greeks, Etruscans and Romans (archaic and classical antiquity). A third section of the course discusses the impact of ancient archaeological heritage on our society, as well as current issues and challenges in archaeology.
Teaching methods
Course with PowerPoint presentation and images (maps, plans, drawings, photographs). A group visit to the Royal Museums of Art and History will be organized during the Spring Session. 
The PowerPoint presentations will be made available to students on the Moodle platform : they contain the main thread of information discussed in the course, as well as the images of artefacts and productions that have been analyzed and contextualized during the course and that the students should be able to identify.
Evaluation methods
The oral exam covers all aspects of the course, in closed book format. It includes one broad question (with preparation time), and the identification of one heritage item presented during the course.
