Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation : 1.3, 1.4 2.3 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.7 Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit On completing this unit the student is able to: · Undertake the actions that will enable them to become a certified translator; · Translate legal documents, certificates, deeds, contracts, insurance policies, etc., from Russian to French while respecting the rules and legal provisions in force; · Respect all of the constraints specific to this type of translation. |
Content
Introduction to the theoretical and practical specifics of certified translation (definitions, legal framework, access to the profession, rules, etc.).

Teaching methods
- In-situ lectures and training sessions.
- Preliminary homework according to instructions given by the teacher via the e-learning platform.
The workshop will start with an introduction to the general theory of certified translation (session 1), followed by 6 sessions each of which will be dedicated to specific text types. Every session will consist in the critical discussion and comment of the exercises and tasks (theoretical introduction, theoretical readings, exercises and practical translation work) prepared at home.
The student’s presence is requested at all in-situ training sessions of the translation workshop.
Evaluation methods
- Over the course of the term : formative assessment.
- June and August/September sessions: summative assessment
In the event of non-delivery of the work within the required time, the student may be sanctioned, according to article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the teachers being allowed to propose to the jury to oppose the registration for the June or September sessions of the student.
The final evaluation of the translation workshop may be completed by an in-situ 4-hour translation exam to be completed in the working conditions of a professional translator's workstation during the official examination session. The student will be given one or more texts directly related to the special field of study of the semester. The exam will cover both the student's theoretical knowledge and practical translation competence in the field. [In that case, both parts of the evaluation will count for 50 % of the final mark each.]
The second session (September session) overall evaluation [100% of the final mark] consists of an in-situ 4-hour translation exam in the working conditions of a professional translator's workstation. The exam will cover both the student's theoretical knowledge and practical translation competence in the field. The evaluation will be conducted according to the quality criteria and procedures required in the specific field of translation.
