The course is designed to introduce students to the discipline of sociology. The course is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the sociological analysis of modernity (Durkheim, Weber; Beck). The second part deals more specifically with the fields of education, mental health, and work by dealing in depth with specific questions: what is the normality of social behaviors, how to explain inequalities in school success, what are the analyses of accountability in employment and work?  In a more transversal way, the aim is to show the successive formulations and reformulations of the distinction between structuralism and actionism, and the epistemological foundations that underlie them. 
In terms of method, the course aims at the appropriation of the concepts by the students, which implies a pedagogy based on a balance between conceptual contributions and examples of application, through reports, photographs, statistical tables, and surveys conducted in the audience.

The final evaluation of the course will take the form of a written exam.
