Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 This teaching unit aims at developing the 4 communication skills (mainly the speaking skills).
Reading Comprehension
At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to understand direct and not so complex factual texts concerned with  general and field-related items.
Level B2- of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
 
2 Listening Comprehension  
  • Individual
 At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to understand a large part of expositions or television and radio programs on subjects of general interest or on subjects related to the field of studies, provided that the language is of a standard level and clearly pronounced and that the presentation is direct and simple.
  • Interactive
At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to understand most of what is said in an everyday conversation on familiar subjects or subjects related to the field of studies provided that the language is of a standard level and clearly pronounced.
Level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
 
3 Speaking Skills
  • Individual
At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to make a short presentation of a subject of general interest or of a field-related subject and to give his/her viewpoint on a topical issue.
  • Interactive
At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible provided the subject is familiar or field-related.

4 Writing Skills
 
At the end of this teaching unit, the student should be able to write a short personal letter, a short report or a short abstract and to write short factual and descriptive reports.

5 Code
  • Vocabulary: consolidation of basic vocabulary and extension of general vocabulary
  • Grammar: consolidation of the command of the basic structures of the Dutch language, particularly those that cause problems for French speaking people
Culture
In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.
 
Content
This course is the continuation of the beginners course LNEER1133 offered in COMU.  This EU aims to develop the receptive and productive skills in Dutch.
It is structured around themes of general interest and field-related themes.
Teaching methods
Depending on the health context this course will be given in face-to-face mode.
Workload  - Classroom learning : 60 h + online self-paced learning
Q1 - The course is divided into 5 themes linked to daily life:
  1. Life in a student town
  2. Youth culture
  3. Food and health
  4. Discovering the world
  5. Money and advertising
Revision and extension of general lexical knowledge and of specific vocabulary linked to the themes dealt with.
  • Revision of the grammatical structures specific to the Dutch language with the help of PowerPoint and Genial.ly presentations on Moodle and the theory in the syllabus. Addtionnal productive exercises are done in class.
  • Activation of receptive skills based on authentic material.
  • Oral conversation practice by means of role plays, conversations, debates and pitch, etc…
Q2: this teaching unit is structured around themes, each of which includes receptive and productive activities aimed at consolidating and broadening vocabulary and grammar. 
-  Receptive activities: written and oral texts and exercices on the comprehension of these.
- Oral production activites about field-related themes. Each theme will be followed by discussions, role plays and debates giving the student the possibility to use the newly acquired vocabulary and structures. Development of presentation skills in Dutch.
- Written production activities: writing short texts and e-mails.
- We will also continue to work on grammar points, likely to cause difficulties to French-speaking learners.

The classroom activities require a certain amount of preparation on the part of the student (exercises, vocabulary, …)
Evaluation methods
Depending on the health context and the availability of large auditoriums, paper-based and oral assessments can be postponed to the session and/or can be done on PC (e.g. onTeams).
Q1
  • Mid-term test on vocabulary, grammar and irregular verbs + active involvement in the classroom and continuous assessment. - 2 points on 20
  • Completion of 2 tasks - 3 points on 20
  • Written evaluation during week 13 - 11 points on 20
  • Interactive oral exam in the last week of the term - 4 points on 20

Q2
  • Mid-term test on vocabulary and irregular verbs - 2 points on 20
  • Presentation - 2 points on 20
  • Oral exam in the last week of the term 6 points on 20
  • Written exam in the last week of the term 10 points on 20
  • The student who failed the first term exam must retake it in week 12 of the second term.
The final grade is the average of the scores obtained for the first and second term
In September, the student will have to take the written (12 points ) and oral exams (8 points) again.
