Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	Contribution of teaching unit  to learning outcomes assigned to programme  With regard to the learning outcomes assigned to the Master's programme in Interpreting, this teaching unit contributes to the development and acquisition of the following goals: 1.1, 1.4, 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 7.4 On completion of this course the student will be able to: -              Capture the essence of a talk delivered in Language C and render the message in a coherent and structured manner in Language A ; -              Use Language A accurately; -              Employ analytical methods to distinguish essential from non-essential content in an oral presentation; -              Develop the ability to find the degree of detachment that makes possible an in-depth analysis of an oral presentation;  -            Detect socio-cultural references present in the talk -              Independently assimilate new know-how (note-taking technique); -              Implement, in an independent manner, skills-development strategies with a view to fostering continuing professional development;

Content

Based on the teaching unit "Founding Principles", this Unit aims at sending students on the road towards consecutive interpretation from English into French. Students will be given advice on how to develop and master an efficient personal note-taking system for English-French consecutive interpreting. They will get acquainted with consecutive interpreting and practice in the classroom with speeches on diverse societal issues of increasing lengths and difficulties. The exercises will enable students to improve their understanding of spoken English at an enhanced pace and register and to address subject-matters linked to society and the on-going news in English-speaking countries.

Teaching methods

Class-room activities
This teaching unit aims at enabling students to use, train, and improve their note-taking skills through practical exercises assessed by the teacher during the classroom activity.
Special attention is given to the following objectives: enabling students to develop an in-depth analytical method to capture the gist of the speech, to grasp its structure & linking words, to distinguish essential from non-essential content, to deliver the speech in a perfect French that is accurate and fluent, and reflects the register used by the English speaker.

 

Evaluation methods

On-going assessment and final examination.
Oral examination: students will be required to interpret a  short (5 minute-long) speech on a general (non-specialized) topic.
The main assessment criteria are
-technique,
-accuracy of the message,
-and quality of the French (grammar, choice of words, register).
Assessment methods and criteria apply to both January and September examinations.
