Main themes
The course covers the following two linguistic fields :
1. Syntax : grammatical categories ; syntactic and semantic functions ; phrases ; simple, complex and compound sentences.
2. Stylistics : analysis of the lexical and syntactic differences between different varieties of English (speech vs writing ; formal vs informal style).
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Provide a foundation course in English syntax and stylistics and train students in the reading and writing of scientific articles in these two fields.
 
Content
This course provides a solid foundation in English syntax and stylistics.
Teaching methods
Combination of lectures and exercise sessions.
Evaluation methods
Active participation in the activities proposed on Moodle (quizzes/exercises) will count for 10% of the final grade.
The rest of the evaluation will take the form of an online written exam on Moodle in June and/or September.
As we are aiming to train language specialists, particular attention will be paid to language accuracy in the assignments and exams related to the course.
Other information
In 2022-2023, this course will also be taken by third-year Bachelor students instead of the LGERM1528 course ("Current issues and trends in English linguistics").
