Main themes
Each year, the course will select a particular theme in logic, philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics, in epistemology or a theme that cuts across these disciplines.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
1 | understand the background of current debates in logic, philosophy of language, philosophy of mathematics and epistemology; |
2 | use certain specific tools for research in those fields; |
3 | have a good general grasp of the breadth of contemporary research and, if appropriate, of the history of those fields; |
4 | be able to make use of contributions from other disciplines in philosophical research in those fields. |
Content
Truth, truthmaking, and grounding
The following topics will be covered:
- philosophical theories of truth: realism, pragmatism, coherentism, deflationism, ...
- the paradoxes of truth and the solutions proposed in the literature
- the distinction between analytical truth and synthetic truth
- truthmaking: the semantics and metaphysics of truthmakers
- grounding: pragmatic, logical and metaphysical analysis
The following topics will be covered:
