The course is an introduction to the archaeological campaigns, to the methods of archaeological survey as well as to the archaeological methods of excavation. The course successively considers the preliminary investigations, the documentary management, the use of aerial photographs and lidar techniques in topographic surveys. The methods of field survey on site or at the micro-regional or territorial scale, by coring and drilling, with the help of geophysics as well in open or wooden area, in subaquatic environment… are presented. The course also considers the organisation of research, excavation methods, the establishment of a topographical reference framework, the recording of data, the interpretation of results and the principles of preventive conservation. Particular environments or techniques will be addressed (confined environments, prehistoric excavation, built context, perishable materials, funerary sites, submerged environments, urban archaeology).
Teaching methods
The course includes theoretical teaching in an auditorium and/or at a distance and field training (excavations or survey). The compulsory internship, associated with the theoretical course and independent of the LARKE1351 internship, is one week long (min. 5 working days).
Evaluation methods
Written exam (or oral exam in second session) with iconographic support.
