Content
  • Vocabulary mastery: general and specific vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation.
  • Autonomous reading and listening comprehension of scientific documents related to the course "Physics I"
  • Concerning oral expression, the students will be able to use everyday language needed for group work.
  • Some students (depending on their results of the placement/exemption test) will have to do a presentation on a physics subject. The students will be taught how to give an effective presentation.
Teaching methods
Depending on their results (placement/exemption test organised in week 1) some students will have their English class:
 - every other week (2h every other week - 12 hours in total)
- every three weeks (2h every three weeks x 9 hours in total) + 1h of presentation (their own + attend their peers' presentations)
Attendance is compulsory.
The teaching methods used will encourage the active and interactive participation of the students. The first step, which is crucial, is the preparation of activities which will be dealt with more fully in the following lesson : students receive precise instructions on how to work either individually or in groups, on a series of problems which will enable them to discover, for instance, certain lexical or grammatical aspects of texts. Afterwards, during the lesson, the students are expected to comment on the different problems they encountered, and the conclusions they came to, or else to apply what they have prepared, for instance, in role plays. These activities lead to various forms of interactivity and cooperation.
Extensive reading of the documents at home and/or in class in order to develop reading strategies.
In class, checking the student's reading strategies as well as analysis and comments.
Discourse cohesion, recurrent grammatical structures and additional lexical and grammatical difficulties
Listening comprehension : various language exercises to ensure a thorough understanding of the message as well as some pronunciation exercises.
Evaluation methods
Compulsory Placement/Exemption test: At the very beginning of the academic year, all students MUST take a placement/exemption test. This test is the same level as the exam. The students will be exempted or put in the correct group according to their level.
Continuous assessment covers all the activities organised during the course and on Moodle. English being the language used during lessons, the students will also be judged on their ability to use the language to carry out the activities in class and on their overall participation. The students who belong to the B groups will, in addition to being positively active during the various sessions in class and doing all the exercises on Moodle, have to do a short and longer presentation. Any unjustified absence from one of these two presentations will automatically lead to the loss of the entire continuous assessment. The continuous assessment is worth 10% of the final mark. 2 unjustified absences for the students who belong to the A groups and 1 unjustified absence for the students who belong to the B groups will automatically lead to the loss of the entire continuous assessment.
Final written exam (in week 14): The examination will test whether the objectives cited above have been attained. It is worth 90% of the final mark.
An absence (justified or not) at the exam will automatically lead to a final mark of absence (justified or not).
Second/third written exam covers everything and continuous assessment will not be taken into account. Only the mark of the exam will be taken into account.
Other information
Course attendance is obligatory
2 unjustified absences will automatically lead to the loss of the entire continuous assessment. (for the students who belong to the A groups)
1 unjustified absence will automatically lead to the loss of the entire continuous assessment. The same rule will be applied if a student fails to do his/her short and/or long presentation. (for the students who belong to the B groups)
