This course provides students with an introduction to health economics methods that are particularly useful for decision making in the health care sector.
The first part of the course presents the health-related economic evaluation methods and covers the following topics:

- Introduction to the basic principles and techniques of economic evaluation
- Measuring quality of life
- Measuring and identifying costs
- Cost-effectiveness modelling
- Budget impact modelling
- Cost-effectiveness threshold
- The financing and organization of the Belgian health system - presentation and critical analysis
- The insurance health care system - presentation and analysis of basic concepts.
- The revelation of societal preferences and the selection criteria used to prioritize care and needs in Belgium
- Ethical aspects in health technology assessment
Teaching methods
The course is delivered in person with the support of a slide show summarising the main theoretical concepts and a large number of examples.
Additional ressources (articles, videos) are also provided to complement the course.
Tutorials are available as stand-alone assigment; they , they are organised in smaller groups, provide an opportunity to apply the economic evaluation methods.
