Main themes
The second part of the course will be devoted to the conceptual handling of data (selection, elimination, making inventories, etc.), to its communication, and to the demonstration of the value of this activity. In-service visits to archives, meetings with archivists, and a series of lectures will round off and detail particular points of instruction.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Archivistics is a scientific discipline dealing with conservation, management, and proper use of archives, in whatever medium or format. Instruction will concern first terminology current in the field, and general principles, including technical and legal problems with preservation of data (problems inherent in new technologies of information and communication), questions of selection and elimination, of description and classification of catalogued items for permanent conservation, creation of research instruments (catalogues, inventories, guides, etc.), and the communication of this heritage and demonstration of its value to the larger society.
 
Content
The course will cover the following content:
  •     Introduction to issues and concepts related to  digital archiving (vulnerability of the digital document, media issues, accessibility, intelligibility and authenticity of information)
  •     (Retro)digitization of documents: methods, tools and digitization strategies for different media (paper/text, sound documents, images, video, ...)
  •     inventorying in a digital context (names, techniques, tools)
  •     digital information management (life cycle of  native and non-native digital archives).
  •     the management of archival heritage (digitized or native digital)
Teaching methods
Theoretical presentations supplemented, as much as possible, by an opening on fieldwork (service visits, presentations by professionals, etc.).
Evaluation methods
The final score (/20) is distributed as follows :
  •     Written exam (/17)
  •     Submission of an assignment / encoding in the Atom catalog ( /3). The assignment must be submitted on the 1st day of the session. Not respecting this deadline will result in a null grade for this part.
