Main themes

Introduction to Medieval and Modern Oriental Studies, with attention to linguistic and cultural diversity. The focus of the course is on: the Byzantine, Slavic and Caucasian World, the Near and Middle Christian and Muslim East.
Wregard to the areas in question, the course addresses the following themes :

1. A historical and geographical orientation;
   
2. A grammatical outline of the main languages  (indo-european, semitic, caucasian);
   
3. An outline of the main works of the literatures written in these languages;
   
4. An historical introduction to the Medieval and Modern phases of the main Oriental cultures and civilisations;
   
5. Specific training courses for using the library of the Oriental Institute and its bibliographical sources
   

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

At the end of this course, students will have acquired an overview of the areas covered (the Byzantine, Slavic and Caucasian World, the Near and Middle East (Christian and Muslim). Furthermore, they will have acquired more advanced knowledge of the main languages and main works of the literatures written in these languages. They will learn how to use the different sections of the Oriental library, the catalogue and the bibliographical tools of orientalism.

Content

Introduction to Medieval and Modern Oriental Studies, with attention to linguistic and cultural diversity. The focus of the course is on : the  Christian and Muslim Near and Middle East, Semitic and inddoeuropean languages, Byzance and the Caucasus.

Teaching methods

Classroom instruction sustained by the Moodle virtual teaching environment. It requires active involvement. Students are expected to closely read the documents posted on Moodle, as a preparation for the successive sessions.

Evaluation methods

Written exam on all materials.
Note : students who have failed to sufficiently attend the course (more than 3 absences) may be excluded from the exam, as per recommendation by the jury.
