Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	The course has a twofold aim (i) The course intends to give the students an analytical overview of (a) the way in which the European integration process has an impact on the institutional structure, policies and political processes in the member states; and (b) the processes that shape the national preferences of member state to participate in EU decision-making. (ii) The course intends to contribute to train students in conducting empirical research on the Europeanization; to present the findings of their research in an oral presentation and a written paper; and to discuss the research of their fellow students in a critical and constructive way.

Content

The course encompasses several conceptual and theoretical approaches in the study of europeanisation processes, with a particular emphasis on intra-paradigmatic variabilities and debates. It covers aspects of the europeanisation of the policies, politics and even of the institutional system of the member states. The course consists of two main parts. First, a series of lectures introduce several conceptual and theoretical approaches in the study of europeanisation. Second, students will have to carry out empirical research based on Europeanisation theories and approaches on a specific case study. They have to present the results of their research, discuss each other work critically, and write a final paper.

Evaluation methods

In January, the final paper counts for 70% of the grades; the oral presentations for 15%, the memos for 10% and the feedback to fellow students for 5%. As the oral presentations cannot be redone and as there are no feedback to provide to fellow students and memos to do in August, 100% of the final grade of the August session will be on the paper. However, in order to compensate, the requirements for the final paper in August can differ from the requirements for the paper in January (the details are given in the annually updated syllabus).
