Main themes
This course explores, from a number of angles, the political ideas which have shaped the history of Europe. Particular attention will be paid to the emergence and development of values fundamental to European political culture, such as democracy, individual freedom, equality and solidarity. We will relate these discussions to current events.

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |

Students will gain a firm grasp of certain political concepts, such as freedom, democracy and equality. They will learn to understand the nuances of these concepts, and how they have evolved through the various schools of thought in Europe. We will perform a critical analysis of the influence of these concepts on European political history and on contemporary issues in society, illustrating this with topical examples. Students will examine differences in the way these concepts are interpreted in Member States, in the light of their historical, cultural, political and social development. |
