Content
The course begins with the semiotics stemming from F. de Saussure's linguistics - structural semiotics - and then, with the pragmatic current, focuses on the specific contexts of interaction, leading finally to C.S. Peirce's semiotics, which places interpretation at the centre of the functioning of the different types of signs and opens the way today to cognitive semiotics.
In doing so, the course covers, discusses and compares the basic concepts of each course and tries to reflect the specific point of view taken by each of them: the meaning of the sign, the relationship caused by him or the interpretation against them and at the same time is.
The course seeks to better illustrate each concept and to do so frequently resorted to regular communication devices: interactive situations, newspapers, web sites, TV shows, pubs, posters, etc.. The syllabus allow the student to return to their notions from scientific contexts.
Teaching methods
Lecture given in large audience. Depending on the themes, some interactive processes are exploited.
Evaluation methods
The evaluation focuses on understanding and assimilation of concepts and theoretical frameworks discussed both during and in the portfolio of texts and on the ability of students to apply them to the analysis of devices sémiotic basic questions.
January session: the exam is written, or, in January only, oral under certain conditions and only for students of the minor. The written exam consists of MCQs (multiple choice questions) and an optional open question, which can influence the score for max. 2 points out of 20. The oral exam is based on open questions.
Second session (September): written exam, multiple choice questions (MCQs) and an optional open question, which can influence the score for max. 2 points out of 20. If the number of students is less than or equal to 30, the exam will be written with open questions.

This course is part of the minor in information and communication. It provides the theoretical basis for the course LCOMU1316 Semiotic Approaches in Communication which focuses on the methodology and analysis tools used in this field.
