·         A theoretical component dedicated to the theoretical foundations of terminology and terminography (particularly the general theory of terminology, specialist language, and the terminological unit)
·         A practical component comprising a number of exercises:
o   textual analysis (general evaluation, syntactic and lexical evaluation of texts of varying degrees of specialisation)
o   identifying terms and other terminologically useful information in a specialised text or corpus of texts
o   sketching and criticising conceptual diagrams
o   drafting definitions
compiling terminology files.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

AA-FS-TL.To develop expertise and a high level of competence in the fields of terminology, terminotics, localisation, technical writing, and project management in translation and localisation, in order to be able to engage effectively in language service provision of this type.
Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit
On completing this unit the student is able to:
·         Define the usefulness of terminology;
·         Define terminology as an interdisciplinary and autonomous subject;
·         Define key concepts linked to terminology;
·         Distinguish systematic and ad hoc approaches to terminology;
·         Outline characteristics and criticisms of the general theory of terminology;
·         List the characteristics of a specialist text in terms of organisationand lexical and syntactic structure;
·         List the useful information to be derived from a specialist text or a corpus of such texts with regard to terminological work;
·         Construct, on the basis of a corpus of texts, one or more conceptual diagrams showing the relationships between concepts appertaining to a single field, utilising theoretical expositions and practical exercises covered in the course;
Complete, on the basis of a corpus of texts, one or more terminology files, utilising theoretical expositions and practical exercises covered in the course.
 
Content
The terminology course is composed of two sections: one theoretical, the other practical. The theoretical component, in a lecture-based format, is dedicated to the theoretical foundations of terminology and terminography. The practical component comprises a number of exercises commented and corrected by the lecturer.

Written exam in June and September.
The written exam is made up of two parts: a theoretical one (1h30) ; a practical one (4h00) in computer lab consisting of elaborating concept diagrams and terminological cards.
