Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation : 2.2, 2.5 3.3, 3.4 5.5, 5.8 7.1, 7.3 AA-FS-TA. Develop expertise and a high level of competence in the field of adapting audio-visual material into French, from two foreign languages, with a view to participating successfully in the professional multilingual audio-visual sector. Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit On completing this unit the student is able to: · Detect underlying sociocultural components of a text and deploy strategies for their most appropriate transposition; · Analyse the intercultural components of a text in the light of theoretical models and concepts; · Analyse and deploy linguistic resources in French and one of the other languages studied in order to translate a text in a manner that respects cultural conventions; · Justify translation choices while maintaining critical distance. |
Content
This course will deal with several aspects of translation/interpreting as an intercultural mediation activity from a theoretical (review of current research) and practical perspective. We will first review the relevant literature and illustrate the issues with examples taken from the practice for the language combinations proposed by the Louvain School of Translation and Interpreting. Students will analyse their practice in light of the concepts and theoretical models presented in the lectures. They will identify the sociocultural components of the source texts, exploit the linguistic resources of the target language which will enable them to translate a text respecting the conventions of the target culture and justify their translation choices backed by scientific evidence. Students will confront their points of view in team work with students with different language combinations in awareness raising exercises in order to discover the implications of a multicultural approach of translation in general and for French as target language in particular.

Formative and certificative assessmentCertificative assessment: paper 70% + presentation 20%+ final oral exam 10%. The oral exam cannot be held unless the paper has been submitted and presented orally within the prescribed time limits. The use of machine translation is strictly forbidden.
September exam: paper to be handed out by the beginning of august (70%) + oral exam (30%, presentation + questions about the course). The oral exam cannot be held unless the paper has been submitted and presented orally within the prescribed time limits. The use of machine translation is strictly forbidden.
The written and oral assignments are personal assignments that will reflect the student's skills. The references have to be mentioned adequately and the use of machine translation is strictly forbidden.
