Main themes
To achieve its objectives, the course will address the following themes:
- Meanings of notions of religious experience and pastoral practice;
- Source, genesis and development of pastoral / practical theologies;
- Current methods in pastoral / practical theology;
- Particular attention to the context in which the Christian mission unfolds;
- Application to current issues.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 - identify the nature, goals and actors of pastoral care;
- use the necessary tools to describe, analyze and evaluate pastoral practices;
- articulate ecclesiology, pastoral theology and canon law.
According to the Bachelor's Degree in Religious Sciences:
·  A. to master the knowledge to explain Christianity in its cultural environment according to theological disciplines;
·  A.2. to understand and explain the Christian theological tradition in its major theoretical currents by contextualising them;

B. To use appropriate concepts to develop theological reflection;
B.1. to know the notions proper to theology and its epistemology;
B.4. To perceive the complementarity of the theological disciplines of positive theology, systematic theology and practical theology;
 
 
 
 
3 C. to properly use the tools for rigorous reflection and research in theology;
C.1. to know the diversity of the methods of analysis and research used in theology

D. To develop a personal theological reflection and critical thinking;
 
D.1. To draft a reflection on a theological question using different disciplines and methods in theology.
 
D.3. To distinguish between the theological analysis of an issue or situation and a commonsense analysis.
 
Content
The introduction to practical theology will take place in four phases. It will begin by questioning the status of the experience of faith (1). The first stage will enable us to discover the stakes of pastoral / practical theology today and its method (2), as well as its history (3) and the reference texts (4). The present situation will then be studied in order to better understand how to proclaim the gospel today: Church and society, "liquid modernity", post-Christianity, culture and faith, pluralism, individualism, crisis of transmission (5). Finally, some questions of practical theology will be addressed (6).

COVID: Face-to-face will be encouraged wherever possible.
Hybrid modalities for online teaching are possible.
The course is grouped on two Saturdays in February.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

Students will be evaluated on the basis of three exercises:
- an analysis of testimony of faith, during the course, grade 1/20;
- field observation, with reports and analysis, grade 11/20;
- an oral presentation of this study, highlighting the knowledge acquired in the course, integrating the study of normative dimensions (resources taken from part B of the course: Introduction to Canon Law) grade 8/20.

Teaching methods
The course is concentrated on two Saturdays, online on TEAMS, with recording.
Evaluation methods
A short written work is devoted to the critical synthesis of two articles relating to the "theology of canon law", for 50% of the note.
Open book written exam on Moodle (1h30 online), for 50% of the mark. A list of questions is made available to students at the end of the course. The examination consists of a theoretical question and a practical casus.
