Main themes
The topics addressed during the classes aim at arousing the interests of young adults: we shall speak about hobbies, leisure, holidays, studies and possible future professions, daily life and contemporary events, trips and relations with others, and the culture (that is, the habits and customs) of the countries that speak the target language.
This course will concentrate upon both communicative aspects and formal language correction (at the level of pronunciation and grammar for example)
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 By the end of this learning unit, the student should have reached an upper-intermediate level in four areas:
  1. listening (B2-),
  2. reading (B2-) ,
  3. speaking (B1+) both individual and interactive,
  4. writing (B1+)
 
Content
The themes tackled in this learning unit will focus upon those which arouse the interest of young adults and refer to their hobbies, pastimes, holidays and future profession(s), their ordinary, everyday life, current affairs, travel and relationships with others and the culture (in the wide sense of human activity) of the countries whose language they are studying.
This course will concentrate upon both communicative aspects and formal language correction (at the level of pronunciation and grammar for example).
Teaching methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

If the health situation permits (green code), this teaching unit is given face-to-face and partially in e-learning.
60 hours of face-to-face lessons in small groups of 25 students (4 hours per week).
  • presentation of "basic texts" (articles and sound recordings) relating to the thematic areas mentioned above, on which oral and written expression and listening comprehension are based, oral production activities (role-plays, debates, conversations, etc.) (2 hours).
  • Listening comprehension and written expression exercises (2 hours).
40 hours of self-study:
  • systematic study of vocabulary, integrated into listening and reading comprehension exercises;
  • preparation of reading, listening and speaking exercises;
  • updating of notes, revision;
  • revision of basic grammar (theory and individual exercises, to be carried out with the e-learning platform Moodle)
If the sanitary situation does not allow it (code yellow or orange),
30 hours of face-to-face lessons in small groups of max. 15 students (2 hours per week).
  • Presentation of "basic texts" (articles and sound recordings) in the above-mentioned thematic areas, on which oral and written expression and listening comprehension are based, and oral production activities (role-plays, debates, conversations, etc.).
70 hours of autonomous study:
  • Systematic study of vocabulary, integrated into listening and reading comprehension exercises;
  • preparation of reading, listening and speaking exercises;
  • listening comprehension and written expression exercises to be carried out with the e-learning platform Moodle.
  • updating notes, revision;
  • revision of basic grammar (theory and individual exercises, to be done with the e-learning platform Moodle)
In the event of a red (or orange) code, this teaching unit will take place in the form of distance learning. 
Depending on the situation (e.g. for health or pedagogical reasons), the course may switch to distance learning at any time.
Evaluation methods

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the information in this section is particularly likely to change.

If the health situation permits, i.e.: face-to-face courses: permanent evaluation throughout the year.
Numerous compulsory tests will be organised during the semester in the form of continuous monitoring.
The evaluation will consist of four parts, in accordance with the objectives pursued and will deal with the same topics as those covered (convergent use of the acquis). The assessment of the code (vocabulary and grammar) will be integrated into the assessments of skills (oral and written).
  • Hearing comprehension assessment (analytical and global): 30% of the points.
  • Reading comprehension assessment: 30% of points.
  • Evaluation of oral expression (individual and interactive): 20% of points.
  • Assessment of written expression: 20% of the points.
Written and oral examination in week 14.
If the health situation (or other crisis situation) does not allow for ongoing assessment (e.g. due to a switch to distance learning), then:
  • The written evaluation during the courses will be replaced by a written distance exam in week 14 (Q1) or during the January session (Q1): vocabulary, listening comprehension, written expression and grammar = 80% of the final mark) with a platform allowing for remote monitoring (proctoring). Teachers will place mock tests on the Moodle platform. Participation in these mock tests can earn the student a bonus point for the written part. 
  • Oral presentations on Teams during the year count for 5% of the final grade, and the oral exam on Teams, based on the themes covered in the course and questions related to the course content, for 15% of the final grade. Vocabulary questions may also be asked during this oral examination.
If the proctoring platform for the written examination cannot be used for any reason, the written examination will be cancelled and replaced only by the presentations and the oral assessment based on the themes covered in the course, questions relating to the course content and vocabulary questions. This mark will then constitute 100% of the final mark.
Taking into account the health situation, if the possibility is given to us to organise a face-to-face written exam, we will opt for this possibility and will organise a face-to-face written exam covering vocabulary, written expression and listening and reading comprehension.
The oral examination would be maintained as a supplement to assess the students' oral communicative skills.
Attention:
All tests in week 14 or during the January session are compulsory. If you are absent (without official justification) for any part of the assessment, this will imply an "absence" mark for the whole assessment. A student who fails to take part of the assessment will therefore be disqualified from taking the other parts of the assessment. If you are absent without official justification for tests during the term, you will receive a 0/20 for the test(s).
Attendance at the course (in person or by distance learning) is compulsory. If the teacher deems it useful, he/she may propose to the jury to oppose the registration to the course examination of a student who has not followed the learning activities regularly (RGEE - art. 72).
If the professor expresses doubt about a student's performance in a written certification evaluation, the professor shall question the student orally on the same subject in the days following the evaluation in order to verify the student's competencies.
