Main themes
The first part of the course will be devoted to fundamental notions of archivistics and problems with the conservation of documents (archive storage, material restoration, etc.). In-service visits to archives, meetings with archivists, and a series of lectures will round off and detail particular points of instruction.
Aims

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 Archivistics is a scientific discipline dealing with conservation, management, and proper use of archives, in whatever medium or format.
Instruction will concern first terminology current in the field, and general principles, including technical and legal problems with preservation of data (problems inherent in new technologies of information and communication), questions of selection and elimination, of description and classification of catalogued items for permanent conservation, creation of research instruments (catalogues, inventories, guides, etc.), and the communication of this heritage and demonstration of its value to the larger society.
 
Content

The course will cover the following content:
  •     the archivist, his missions, his interventions at each stage of the life cycle of the documents;
  •     the collection, selection and disposal of archives;
  •     classification and indexing;
  •     the enhancement of collections

 Theoretical presentations complemented, as much as possible, by an openness to fieldwork (service visits, presentations by practitioners, etc.) and a problematized approach to current archival challenges (resolution of practical cases)
